Anyone ever been put under for a c-section?
This whole pregnancy as my last we are watching my platelets.
Apparently if the hemoglobin and platelets are too low when they test my blood on the surgery day, they cannot give me a spinal or I will bleed out.
It depends what the anatesologist wants to do.
I was wondering how low it would have to be???
It would upset me greatly not seeing my LO being born.

I was not put out. I can understand being upset, but the safety of you ALL is whats most important. Make dh tKe tons of pics, and try to be positive.

Do you have ITP? I have my whole life. I was able to get my platelets up enough for the epidural this pregnancy. Feel free to FM me!!
It really depends on the anesthesiologist. Some will do it as low as 60-70, some want it over 100.

Re: Anyone ever been put under for a c-section?
How far along are you now? I have lupus which messes w/ my platelets. They've been low since April, but they only took proactive measures as my due date got closer. I started taking steroids 7/13 when my platelets were 78, after taking 40mg daily as of a week ago they were 96! I go back to the hematologist on Friday to see what the latest # is. Are you seeing a hema. doc? I highly recommend Dr. Kurzyna in New Hyde Park if you need one. She's been great. They also have something called IVIG they can use if your body doesn't respond to steroids (it incercepts the immune system from attacking your cells which is what happens in my case I guess).
I know the anesthesiologists limit at NS Manhasset is 90, anything below that and no epidural! I was ready to face a drug free labor if I had to, but the possibility of being put out for a csection (if needed) had me beside myself.....after all we've been through I could not imagine not being awake to hear our LO's first cries!! I'm so happy my # is high enough now. Good luck!!

I agree, your safety and well being trumps seeing the delivery. I'm sorry

Typically when you are put out for a section, no one (even DH) is allowed in the room. So that's probably why she is upset also. The crappy thing is that unless your numbers are astronomically low, there really is no risk with the epidural, but understandably, the anesthesiologists still aren't willing to do it.

Re: Anyone ever been put under for a c-section?
I am seeing a hemotologist, but I have been borderline like 101 and 107. so he said no steriods.
Recent blood test said platelets were 71.
I have my c-section on Thursday so I guess I will have to see how it goes...
Thanks ladies for the info...

Re: Anyone ever been put under for a c-section?
I was put out with my second c-section. The epidural did not take and I felt them cut me.
DH had to leave the room. It was fine in the end. I woke up to a healthy baby and thats all that mattered really. DH got to hold her for a long time before I woke up- it was harder on him than me as he was worried about how I was doing.

Re: Anyone ever been put under for a c-section?
Crashing I was not out for my csecs but my Mom was out for both of hers because she was born with missing bones in her back they would not give her and epidural or spinal. She was awake within mins after our births. My father was not allowed in the room but they took my brother and I to recovery right away so he was able to see us right after birth. Good luck!
