Anyone else out there...

Thinking of NOT having an epidural?

DH and I went to our all day child preparation class yesterday and I really felt like I am the only person on the planet who doesn't want to have an epidural (keep in mind that I am reserving the right to change my mind once I feel the pain!)

I was just wondering if there are any other girls out there who are planning on not getting one... at least right now!

Am I all alone?

I said the same thing to DH. Unfortunately, we're having a c-section, but if I was to have a vaginal birth, I really wanted to try to do it without the epidural...

I plan on not getting one however I also reserve the right to change my mind when the pain hits. For now though my plan is to try and go natural...no epi. You are not alone.

My theory at this point is to try and have the baby the old fashion way, but to accept medical advances if necessary.

i am open to both possibilities... i feel like i can't really make a decision until i am in the moment, so i'll figure out when the time comes.

Re: Anyone else out there...

I thought/am thinking about it...but only b/c I thought I heard that (1) it slows down the whole birth process and (2) sometimes the baby has trouble latching on if you plan to BF.

I have since decided to get the EPI b/c my Dr.(s) have said that it doesn't slow down the labor process and it can in fact speed it up if given at the right time (b/c it helps relax you). And, I'm sure in the heat of the moment I'm going to want it anyway !

Re: Anyone else out there...

I did not have and epidural when I had my son, but I did with my 2 girls. I am not getting an epidural this time either.

The contractions were painful, but I could totally deal with them until I hit transition (8-10 cm). Once I hit that point I knew I was close, so I just sucked it up and dealt with it however I could. I ended up putting a washcloth into my mouth and just screaming into it.

When my son was born he was much more aware than the girls. He came out and cried for 2 seconds. That whole night he was wide awake and we just cuddled and looked at each other. With my girls they were groggy and sleeping all the time but DS was not like that, and I think not getting the epidural is the reason.

One thing that can help you prepare is to do research. From all my research I knew that when you feel like giving up you're in transition and only have an hour left. If I hadn't know I may have gotten the epi at that point.

I would also try and alternative to lamaze classes. Bradley classes are wonderful, and many women swear they felt next to no pain using that method.

Does your hospital offer pain relief techniques? A birthing ball really helped me, and they let me stand in the shower during early labor. The water hitting my back helped.

Remember that millions of women have babies with no pain meds, and you can do it too.

Here are some websites I read while preparing for it. Birthing Naturally

Natural Childbirth

Re: Anyone else out there...

I'm planning to try to let things happen as naturally as possible (without epi if possible). But, being that I have no idea what I am in for - I'm open to the possibility that I may give in and get one!

Re: Anyone else out there...

I definitely appreciate all of your responses, makes me feel as though I am not alone.

What I don't appreciate is the comments I receive from other women who have had babies who do not seem to respect my opinion that I don't want to have an epidural. It's almost as though they are making me feel stupid because I don't want one. I don't judge people who tell me they do want the epi, so why should they make my choice seem not valued.

I guess I was just getting tired of all the negative comments and needed some sign that there were others like me out there!

They told us at the class yesterday that 90% of the deliveries at my hospital have epidurals!!!! That's a lot!!

I got those kind of comments too. I just brushed them off.

I think people also under estimate the risks associated with epidurals.

One poster here (I think johnsae?) had a horrible reaction to the epidural.

Other women have pains in there back for years after having one (me included).

If you were dead set on having one you would hear comments from people who don't believe in it. Just try to only talk to people who are willing to have an intelligent conversation about it.

I am having a C-section. I would probably want an EPI but I would probably read more about it first.

Thanks! I was actually more freaked out about the epidural after watching the video in class yesterday than I was before watching the video. Amazingly enough, I am more scared to have an epi than I am of labor! (I have fear of needles in my spine issues) Go figure!
