Anyone else have/had a newborn that
barely sleeps during the day?? My DD is 2.5 weeks and she barely sleeps. She is so alert, has been ever since the second she was born--the nurses kept saying I have such an alert baby. All she wants to do is nurse. All day long. She'll be off the boob for like 30 mins and wanna be back on. At night, she'll usually go 2 hours between feedings, SOME nights, she'll do one 4 hour stretch.
I know she's getting milk because she gained 12 oz. in only 4 days at her last weight check and she poops and pees like crazy, with every feeding.
Is this normal? I feel like my friends' babies all slept most of the day.

Re: Anyone else have/had a newborn that
Ds was the same way. He was always awake (thankfully not fussy just awake): he would nurse almost every 2 hours! I found a lot of it was just to soothe himself so I offered a pacifier. He usually would take it in place of nursing - but if he was hungry he would spit it out and cry. He's a month old now and goes 3-4 hours between nursing and is sleeping a little more during the day- but definitely not sleeping as much as you think a newborn should sleep. I put him on a playmat often - both stomach and back. He's already rolling from stomach to back

Re: Anyone else have/had a newborn that
My dd was like that and she is now 19 months and never stops moving...I was under the impression when she was born that all newborns do is sleep and I couldn't understand why she didn't...lol...she would cat nap for an hour or so during the day and be fussy the rest of the time...I did luck out with her that she started sleeping through the night at 5 weeks...now I just had a ds a month ago and all he does is sleep except for at night..so I guess it really depends on the baby

Normal. My DD was super alert as a newborn & rarely slept during the day unless we rocked and bounced her to sleep when she was tired. She hasn't changed at 7 months she still takes really short cat naps but does do better at night.

Thanks, ladies. She'll doze off for like 10 minutes and then she'll be wide awake again. I've tried the pacifier, sometimes she'll take it, sometimes not. At least she gives me a couple hour stretches at night

When DS was a newborn he napped for 30 min- an hour at a time. Then he would be awake for 2 hours etc. I was so confused when I heard people say "babies sleep all the time" I was like uhhhhhh no they don't!

Re: Anyone else have/had a newborn that
Yes my DS was like this. I was always a bit bitter about the whole enjoy the sleepy newborn phase. On top of it my DS was not a happy/content awake baby unless he was in the process of nursing. He did sleep for longer stretches at night though and was STTN @ 5 months extremely reliably.

Lol I feel the same way! Mommy needs a nap, or the chance to do a load of laundry

She's like this too. She'll be content for a few minutes in her swing then it's cries until she's nursing. Hopefully she'll STTN soon :)

Re: Anyone else have/had a newborn that
I will tell you it gets so much better @ 6months and then a year. He became a much happier awake baby when he could move around and do some things by himself. He has never been a great napper though at 2 years old he is actually taking a 1.5 -2 hour nap reliably every day...A miracle!

Me! My DD never slept as a newborn. She would doze during the day for like 20 min at a time. At night it waa 2 hours tops. It was awful. Some babies are just not sleepers.

Re: Anyone else have/had a newborn that
My 2nd DD was like that, I posted about it asking for help to get her to nap, tried everything and nothing worked, spent my whole maternity leave desperately trying to get her to nap....almost 8 months later she still for the most part wont nap at daycare. On weekends, if Im lucky, maybe I can get in one nap or she will fall asleep in the car.

Re: Anyone else have/had a newborn that
My third was like that. So alert as well. She never napped well but slept very well at night (but we co slept). She would fall asleep after nursing but wouldn't transfer to crib well. And she would fall asleep in the car or stroller. Those were pretty much her naps until recently at 14 months. She happily goes down for a nap during the day now but has a harder time shutting off at night.

DS was like that - I remeber being in the hospital with him wide awake. It was tough but as soon as I accepted that he was a alert and inquisitive kid, it got better for me!

Re: Anyone else have/had a newborn that
That was totally my DD. She would nurse pretty much all dang day and never sleep, it was crazy! I couldn't even tell you how many times people told me that she is so alert.
I got comments like "wow, she's still hungry?!" And "I think you should give formula so she'll sleep better."
My DD started taking naps better around 6 months and now at 9 months she naps 1-2x per day and sleeps through the night like a champ. (Knock on wood)
Just keep doing what you're doing. Hopefully your LO will start napping and sleeping better sooner rather than later.

DS never slept a lot during the day as a newborn. I only cared that he eventually started sttn!
