Anyone else experience this?
I was diagnosed today with what is believed to be a case of the shingles on my back. I've actually had it before, and contrary to popular belief, you do not only have to be elderly to have shingles and it can happen more than once. They took a culture and put me on Valtrex. The last time I had this happen was 2 years ago, and it was in the same exact spot on my back. It's very painful. So my OB's office sent me to a dermatology office they work with, and they took a culture there and I should have the results by Wednesday. I was nervous to go on Valtrex while being preggo, but it is supposed to be safe (a "Class B" drug according to the FDA) and I don't want the condition to get worse. Now all of a sudden (sorry if TMI) I think I have a yeast infection to boot. I'm in my 24th week and prior to this I haven't really experienced any kind of medical ailment. I was also prescribed topical erythromycin for the wonderful acne on my face that does not seem to go away. Just curious if anyone else has experienced any of these things during pregnancy and if this is more common than I think. Is it the stress that brings this on? Hormones? I'm just concerned that this is all happening at the same time.
ETA: I am so nervous right now regarding the possibility of shingles. More because I don't know if the infection is traveling through my bloodstream and to my baby. I'm trying not to worry too much - if anyone has heard of someone developing shingles during pregnancy or has experienced this, please let me know or FM me. TIA.

I'm sorry I don't know of anyone who has had this - did you do any research online or ask your doctor for more information? Just wanted to send hugs!

Thank you for the support. I did do some research online but that just made me more crazy. The dermatologist said the shingles shouldn't pose a risk to the baby but some research shows that it does. The most risk occurs in the first half of pregnancy, and since I am 24 weeks now, I would hope that me and the baby are in a better position. I'm following up with my OB on Monday and should get the culture results on Wednesday. It's just frustrating and the whole situation makes me upset. I guess it was good though that I called right away and got on medicine right away for it.

Re: Anyone else experience this?
I feel so bad for you! I don't want to scare you but my mom had the shingles really bad while she was going through radiation therapy and it was TERRIBLE! It was painful and caused other complications...but I haven't heard of anyone having it while pregnant. My best advice for you would be to get as much rest as possible to allow your body to heal. My mom had very little immunity due to all the treatments, so her body was weak and couldn't really fight it off very well. As long as you are healthy though, you might only get a small touch of it and hopefully it will subside quickly. My prayers are with you and I hope you feel better!!!
