Anyone else crazy enough to do yardwork this weekend?
I'm two plants away from finishing a section of the garden I've been working on for weeks now. I wanted to finish so badly that I was out there yesterday morning for two hours, even though it was over 90.
By the time I came in to eat lunch and consider going back out there to do some shade gardening, it was 96 degrees. I'm not THAT crazy.
I think though, I might put in some time tonight. Depends on the heat I guess!
Did you guys do anything? Or are you done gardening in this heat?

I've been gardening in the heat! My gardens seem to need some extra TLC in this weather - it's brutal on the annuals I planted (that thrived last year).
I'm very accostomed to being active in the heat -- I'm out with the horses no matter the weather. Even still, this heat has been brutal. Everyone should be careful with themselves and their animals in this heat. Keep hydrated and keep your pets hydrated as well!
ETA -- greenfreak -- An aside... Ever since you mentioned using rainwater for inside plants that get brown due to chemicals in the water, I've been dying to collect rain water for this purpose. Of course, we haven't had a drop of water by me since!

Re: Anyone else crazy enough to do yardwork this weekend?
I hear ya on the hydration! Each time I would get done digging a hole and planting one plant, I would stand in the shade, drink water, and wait until my heart rate went back to normal before I continued. Seemed to work for me, although it did take longer than I thought. I'm not hurting today so I must have done something right.
Do you realize we haven't had rain in about three weeks? My rain barrel has been completely dry. I don't water my grass because mine usually thrives with just normal rain but since I have to water all the new plants, the yard is getting some water too. I can already see the difference in the sections that get water and the ones that don't.
How are you going to collect rainwater? Just have a bucket outside or something? A barrel? I just wrote a blog on the whole rain barrel thing

Re: Anyone else crazy enough to do yardwork this weekend?
I feel like I drank two gallons of water a day this weekend! I was sweating just watering the plants this morning!
I think by me, it's been even longer than 3 weeks. Or maybe it just feels like it! LOL Most of those storms a few weeks ago passed us by. We got a drizzle on one day and that's it! It's SO DRY - we desperately need a good rain here on the south shore of Nassau!
I'm going to check out your blog on the rain barrel! We don't have a huge yard right now, but maybe we can still make it work. I was going to try a bucket to start. When we move down south, we should have plenty of room for one. Is it your LIF blog or do you have another one? I'd love to learn more about collecting rain water!

Well - its not "yard" work per se but we did install out new vinyl fence...it took us all 3 days because we kept waiting until the sun wasn't directly on us each day.

I'm sorry, the end of my last post was supposed to be a link to the blog entry but I got sidetracked when I went to get the link.
My website (blog) about the rain barrel experience
I wrote it so I could write a review on the manufacturer's website and link back to my site. But there's other info in there too.
Thanks!

Re: Anyone else crazy enough to do yardwork this weekend?
yardwork I don't think a gazebo is part of yardwork, but we did put up out gazebo on Saturday. Not too hot but hot enough. Drinking water just didn't seem like enough. Tried going outside yesterday to do some other work (clean up firework mess from neighbors), but it was wayyyyyyyyyyy to hot out and I didn't feel very good after about 15 mins. Back in the house & into the A/C.
But some of the hanging plants need to be watered like 3 times a day. The pots were completely dry. Crazy!

Re: Anyone else crazy enough to do yardwork this weekend?
Doesn't sound like the heat stopped you guys.
I hear ya about the potted plants. I have to water every night, I still have little plants in cellpacks. I do one pass and go to the other side of the yard and then come back. I soak them at night and it actually seems to be working, with just one watering. But these were all plants that I potted myself, so I had new potting soil.
Have you ever seen those glass bulb things that you fill with water and shove into the dirt? I'm so curious about them but no one I know has tried them.
