Anyone disappointed in DC's reaction to presents?
DS is 4 1/2 and lately he's been a handful (he's been sick and is a horrible patient). Today- although it was generally a nice Christmas I was dissapointed in his behavior. He was basically acting like a spoiled/greedy kid. He didn't say thank you to family members for gifts and complained about what he DIDN'T get as opposed to being thankful for what he DID get (which was A LOT!) He's typically a great kid so I was surprised by the way he acted today. It made me sad. I want him to be appreciative and thankful for what he has. Any words of wisdom or can anyone relate?

Re: Anyone disappointed in DC's reaction to presents?
It might have been overwhelming for him. What we do when our kids receive presents is to immediately stop them and say DC please thank GIVER if they have not independently said it themselves. I silently count to 5 in my head to give them a chance to say it first.
As for disappointment, that is harder. I try to establish realistic expectations for my kids before the holidays. They know that they don't get everything they want and that giving is also really important. My son had a "shop" at school. I gave him $15 with the instructions of purchasing items for DD, DH and for me. Well he came home with a lollipop (that he said was for him) and one present for himself and DH to share. I made him give his sister the lollipop and give DH the present. When he gave DD the lollipop the light in her face was breathtaking. I asked DS to look how happy he made his sister and how it felt. He said he could see it made her happy and he felt good about it. He was then so proud to give DH a present and then tried to wrap one of his toys for me. I gave him his own lollipop and he said he understood that it was also really nice to give. I would try to have an opportunity for your DC to give something to someone else with no expectation of anything in return. It is a hard lesson and I think repetition is really important to have it sink in.

Re: Anyone disappointed in DC's reaction to presents?
I could have written this myself! Last year he was so excited about everything and appreciative. This year he was excited about some stuff and clearly didn't like others. He kept asking for more presents and that he wanted a lot of presents.
I was frustrated and upset with DS and hope next year will be better.

Sorry to crash, but this is such a sweet story with a nice ending. It sounds like a good plot for a children's book about giving/receiving

Unfortunately, I can relate. I found myself sad most of the weekend because DS (3yo) was very greedy & is NEVER like that. I was still hanging onto memories of Christmas last year where everything was amazing - it was the most magical Christmas ever. This year - all he wanted were presents. He didn't care who's they were he wanted to open them all & even cried at one point saying - "that's it...I didn't get enough". I was embarrassed & sad. My heart goes out to you - I'm praying it's just a phase.

Anyone disappointed in DC's reaction to presents?
She was pretty good about everything but the hand made leather gifts my father made her while he was in the hospital. Lots of time on his hands. she sorta 'meh' and pushed them over. But she's 4. What can I expect? She won't LOVE everything she gets. BUT this is why we gift open at home, alone just us. No one is invited. I video lots of it and she's really appreciative most of the time.
At 4, she's finally 'getting it' that xmas means surprise gifts under the trees and the stocking full of stuff.
However, we made it clear ALL gifts under the tree had a sender and ONLY the stocking was from santa. So as each present was opened we'd say "this is from auntie... " Or "Grandpa gave you that..." and I think that helped. I want her to KNOW that gifts are not just some magic appearance for being good. Gifts like that are given by people because they love you and they paid for them at a store.
What makes it better is she gets the gift giving part a lot more. SHE LOVES to give gifts. On xmas eve, we went to a friends house and she took the boy a present. She never saw it before it was wrapped and it was just sitting under the tree after her nap. She ran to it and said 'is this mine' no its Aiden's "oh ok, can we go give it to him now. I want him to have it" all excited. All the way over to dinner she said "I want to give it to him" and "make it a surprise". We ate first then left for my friend's house and she kept saying "can we go now to give him the gift" and we finally got there she covered it with her lovie (aka towel so this was serious!) and walked in carefully. She 'surprised' him with it and a hug. then my hubby pulls me aside and says "not once did she ask where her gift was or if she was getting one" it never dawned on me. She was just so happy in GIVING a gift.

Anyone disappointed in DC's reaction to presents?
ds was appreciative - but at times seemed like he was looking for more gifts...
I was glad that ds didn't know how to read yet b/c IL's gifts at their house all said from Santa - and at Easter they first tried to claim Easter Bunny but then said it was them - so I didn't think xmas would be an issue.

Re: Anyone disappointed in DC's reaction to presents?
i can relate, although i have no words of wisdom. My son is becoming VERY spoiled and it frustrates me A LOT.
We never buy him stuff. He asks all the time and we say no. Sorry. you get stuff for your birthday and christmas. So i don't get where it's coming from.
Although my inlaws spoil him a lot. They buy him a toy everytime they go into a store. They buy him apps all the time on their ipad. Pretty much anything he asks for, he gets from them.
This year i feel like he doesn't appreciate at all. He went up to my brother and asked if there were more presents for him and he got quite a few from him. I was embarrassed. We've had talks about it, about how others have nothing and be happy with anything you get, even if it's 1 present, etc etc. It doesn't seem to sink in though.

SAME HERE! All of his grandparents spoil him- def not us (with toys etc). I'm hoping this is not gong to become an ongoing issue. I just want him to be a good person. To be appreciative and know how fortunate he is. I try to model it and talk to him about it often but like you said- not sure it's sinking in yet

I have a feeling for us, it will be an ongoing issue. Which will need to be addressed.
