Any Tomato Gardeners Out there?

Is there an organic way to keep the Aphids (small green insects) off your tomato plants?

I tried washing them off with lemon dishwashing soap, but it seems that just takes care of the problem for the moment. I only seem to get them on the tomato plants, never the basil or pepper.

aren't they nasty!

Re: Any Tomato Gardeners Out there?

my parents have owned a garden center for years... and one year they got aphids on a few of their plants... my dad actually found a place to buy live ladybugs... and just put those on the plants, because ladybugs eat the aphids... lol no idea where he got them, but i'm sure something would come up if you do a search....

Re: Any Tomato Gardeners Out there?

thanks - for the idea, I may try the lady bugs.

I'm surprised your parents only got them once. I always catch them under the leaves - thats where they hang out.

I try not to spray chemicals, so I get them every year on the tomato plants.

yeah... it may have happened more than once, but i just remember the one time that it was bad enough to use lady bugs.... they have a seasonal business, so they start growing the plants in the winter (in a greenhouse), and then open the store in like april to start selling them. so if my dad sees any bugs, he usually treats them early on ( before they start selling them) with chemicals to head off any problems. i think the time he used ladybugs was because the store was already opened and he didn't want to spray chemicals on them while there were customers., etc.

Re: Any Tomato Gardeners Out there?

we never get those bugs/
We also use pasterized manure in our garnen and always have great vegetables.
Especially cucumbers...DH made babmoo sticks and had the vines climb up and tied and they were HUGE!!!!!!

Re: Any Tomato Gardeners Out there?

a quick aphid spray
2 table spoons dish soap 1 gallon of water with a cup of tobacco juice.

spray top and bottom of leaves lasts till it rains.

to make tobacco juice get a decent cigar or chewing tobacco put in a jar fill with water. sit jar under sink or other dark spot and let it fester.
as you use it just add more water to the jar - once it starts to get light looknig add another cigar or tin of chewing tobacco.

Put a small dish of beer in the garden...the bugs love it.

Either Dees Nursery in Oceanside or any ACE hardware sell live ladybugs, that is the most "organic" way.
