Any tips on how to get infants to take medication?

Long story short, we got a call yesterday from St. Catherine of Sienna that a nurse in the hospital had whopping cough and all patients should go on antibotics just in case (especially the infants since they aren't vaccinated yet). My son is 1.5 weeks old. I got the dropper, and of course he spit the first trial out. Gross. Then I tried again and got half of it to stay (I thought this was a success). Any of you mommy pros have any advice? Thanks

Each and every time I have to hold my son down to get antibiotics into his little body...and his gag reflex is awful.

My tricks:
Make sure to position the dropper inside towards the back of his cheek so he has to swallow

Do small doses at a time and just keep going once you know he has swallowed.

Sing loud to distract him.

Smile - sounds funny and I am sure looks crazy while holding a screaming child but I am all for putting on a good show...more importantly they follow your cues so anything helps.

Good Luck...I hope that your little man is okay.

yep...these are pretty much my secrets as well ....the position of the dropper all the way in the back but into the cheek works well. If you position it any other way it makes it easier for them to spit it out.

DS throws up all medicine given to him by a dropper. BAD GAG REFLEX. Per my dr they said put his meds in his bottle w/ some milk/formula etc.

I give my baby vitamins. I let him sort of lick the dropper as I very slowly squeeze the medicine in. It takes a while but it works every day Chat Icon

If you can't get the dropper in to the side of his cheeks, you can use a nipple & put the medication in there. You can switch off with breastmilk (if you're BF'ing) or formula until he takes it all.

We also found a medicine dropper pacifier that worked well.

This is what I was going to write...I put it in his mouth, angled at the back of his cheek, then he starts sucking on the dropper with his tongue, and then I slowly push the medicine in. Good luck!

ditto to these i have to give dd medicine twice a day bc she is on zantac for acid reflux......i also give the meds at feeding time....as dd is drinking her bottle i squeeze the dropper in the corner of her mouth so as shes drinking her formula she is drinking the medicine works every time and she doesnt really taste it/notice it bc shes eating at the same time

They make a special bottle -= you can get it in BRU or any walgreens, cvs, etc... It has a seperate "compartment" for the meds that kinda mixes with the bottle. HTH!Chat Icon

Re: Any tips on how to get infants to take medication?

My son had to have medicine every day when he came home from the hospital. Best advice I got was to mix it in a very small amount of formula with the bottle, and let him drink it before a feed. Worked like a charm.

Don't squirt it all at once--just do a little at a time.

Squirt it onto the back of the cheek.

Good Luck and I hope he feels better! Chat Icon
