Re: any tarantula owners?
i tried that last year. he wants something to pet and play with.
i can not for the life of me imagine this thing escaping and being in my house.
see dh is telling me its a popular pet...my kid tends to fall on the slightly nerdier side so I think he will enjoy it...
for the last few months, his "pet" has been a remote control dinosaur. he feeds it, walks it, reads to it, hugs it, tells him he's the best pet ever. its sad. in a cute wat

I've known a couple of people with tarantulas. They seem to like them. I think they are more popular than most people think.

You may want to read this before you decide. Tarantula as a pet

Re: any tarantula owners?
How about a bird? I used to have a bird and LOOOOOVED him!!!!! Would that negatively impact your son's asthma?
Sorry, but I just think the idea of a bird is 1000 better than a furry spider! But, don't go by me, I am TERRIFIED of insects, etc!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly though, a bird makes a great pet! I had a parakeet and loved him so much... I taught him to fly to my finger! And, he was very interactive- much more than a tarantula would be. He would chirp whenever I came home from school and pace back and forth with excitement in his cage when I got up in the morning!
Poor little guy died when I was HS because he was sick. Try Parrots of the World in Rockville Centre if you decide to go that route!
Good luck!

Re: any tarantula owners?
A great first pet is a bearded dragon lizard. Not so sure about the tarantula.

Re: any tarantula owners?
My brother had a tarantula for years when we were kids, thing just wouldnt die lol. I really wouldnt recommend it as a pet, they dont do anything. And they arent very fond of being handled so ur DS wont be able to play with him that much. I totally agree with bearded dragon though, they dont get to big and they love beng handled, great pet for kids.

Re: any tarantula owners?
If I was in someone's home who had a trantula I would not go in. I am petrified of spiders, they freak me out. a place my sister used to work in someone must have let there pet tarnatula go and it walked in by the front door, she was SCREAMING. I had my door open once and had work done for hours- a new front door installed, and I found one on my kitchen floor. I was SCREAMING, DH did not hear me and I was on the kitchen table crying with his shoe in my hand. I love animals- but a tarantula is a bug- and I do not live with bugs. (b we joke w/ the extermnator that he is my 2nd DH, LOL!) How about a cat that does not promote allergies or a dog that does not promote allergies- JMHO. Sorry to be so harsh. Okay, I am itchy right now....
