any one have a Shith zu?

Do he bark alot. Anyone have any success training them?

My grandfather had shih-tzus when he was alive. He was able to train all of them successfully. He used the clicker method for his last 2 and it worked very well. None of them had barking issues.

I don't have one but a friend of mine does. And the dog does not stop barking. BUT they also never trained her!

<~~~~ only barks when someone is at the door...we started off training and told her to "settle" whenever she's being too rowdy, and then praising her when she's quiet again...

I dont have a shih tzu but i have a toy poodle. HIs barking can be out of control. When i trained him i used a spray bottle and sprayed him everytime he barked for no reason. After about a week or 2 he stopped barking. Now he only barks when he hears a strange noise or someone is at the door. Shih Tzus are very smart and easily trainable dogs. good luck

I have one that is 5 months and is going to training next month. We finally got him sleeping until 6 am and this past week he has been waking up at 2-3-4 am and barking his head off. I got up to take him out and then put him back in the crate and he continued to bark for the next half hour. I hope he will get better after the training. I just don't understand why his progress is starting to move backwards with sleeping through the night....

My parents have one - he only would bark when someone was at the door or heard a LOUD noise.

Well, since my parents house got robbed, he barks at every little noise.

I had one for 13 years growing up and he only barked/howled was if the door bell rang or if we were playing and teasing him..other than that he was quiet as could be!

I do. My Royal is 2 years and 9 months old. He hardly ever barks. He was very easy to train actually.

When I used to crate train mine I would put a baby blanket or some type of blanket over his crate. DH thought I was nuts.. but it worked.. he stopped barking at night. Slowly introduce him to being trained out of his crate at night after a month or so. We used wee wee pads after we thought he was okay enough to block him off in our kitchen. He really is very well behaved and a love muffin :) I love him dearly! Good luck with your fur baby and congrats!

we have one and she only barks at the doorbell, and occasionally when we walk her she barks at other dogs..which is annoying and something she never did before she moved here..but all in all she is very quiet..

I have one, and she only barks when she wants something or if someone is at the door. I think male shih tzu's tend to be barkers, but I'm not sure about that. Her brother comes and stays with us occassionally and he barks much more than she does, but even then only when he hears someone approaching or if there is a loud noise.

we have one. She is just over a yr old. she rarely barks.

She doesnt bark at the door or anything.

She actually only barks if we leave her in a room alone without her and she knows we are int he house or sometimes she will bark at one of the cats to try to "play".

Most times she goes days and days without ever barking once.

We never "trained" her but we did put her in her crate as a puppy the few times she started barking at us for no reason and it never happened again.

then if she barked at the cats we used the can with coins in it to associate the bad noise with teh bark.

Again, only happened a few times and rarely now, so we dont bother.

We live in an Apt. , We couldnt have a barking dog, so we just managed and trained her as "nicely" as possible since Dogs do bark and you really should only "train" them if its excessive or unwanted ( like when someones at the door etc)


BTW_ All my Shih Tzu books say they are not typically barkers.
