I live in the south so I don't live in a high ranch but we have a gate at the top of our stairs. It is great. It is curved so that when you are walking up the stairs, you can still use the top step. It is made my Safety First. We bought it at BRU.

My brother got one from One Step ahead. It is stained and nearly matches his oak railing exactly. They have had it about 8 years and it still looks and works great
