Any girls with previous lower back injuries?
I herniated a disc in high school (about 10 years ago). The last disc in my back. Well, back then I had a lot of pain, went throught extensive Physical Therapy for about a year, then literally had NO complications/NO pain. For about 9 years I totally forgot I even had the injury. Well, I always pretty much figured when I got pregnant, that I would experience some pain from it, but I NEVER thought i would experience pain this early!! I'm only just over 11 weeks, and the pain is excruciating! It's really only bad when I walk around, but it's awful. EXACTLY then pain that I felt the first year that it happened!!! So now I'm freaking out, because 1. If it's this bad ALREADY am I going to be bedridden in a few months?????? 2. Will it ever not hurt again or am I going to permanently damage something???
Does anyone have any suggestions/thoughts??? Anyone else been through this? Thanks so much girls!

The pain and pressure of a pregnancy change constantly, so there is hope that your body will shift in some way that will relieve the pain. Talk to your doctor too! I've gone through weeks of limping on an old hip problem during this pregnancy, followed by weeks of it not bothering me...

Re: Any girls with previous lower back injuries?
I had back surgery when I was 13 and have rods in my back. I experienced pain in the beg but then never again. I was a scheduled c-section from the start because of my back.
The only pain I have now is from picking up Andrew all the time. Since he is getting heavier it is taking its toll on my back. I go to Pain Management.

Re: Any girls with previous lower back injuries?
Hi,
I herniated my disc (L5-S1) two years before I got pregnant with my twins. Although I did some PT what really ended my pain was an epidural procedure in which they injected steroids into my back to decrease the swelling of the disc. I was concerned that it would flare up during the pregnancy esp. since I was having twins. So when I felt a twinge of pain (which was only occassionally) I took some Tylenol and rested. I never had any other problems with it at all. Good luck.

I have two herniated discs and i am 36 wks and i dont have any back pain for that but i did have carpal tunnel and that worsened. Maybe the baby is laying on your back and that is why you are feeling it

Re: Any girls with previous lower back injuries?
I had a previous injury and it would act up once in a while. As soon as I got pregnant, the pain hit me like a ton of bricks. It was unbearable, especially in the morning. I decided to go to a chiropractor to see what they said. And let me tell you, she helped me sooo much! I went 3x's a week for a while, then 2x's, so by the third trimester, I rarely even had to go to her. If you are in a lot of pain, I suggest visiting a chiropractor. I was very hesitant at first, thinking I could hurt the baby, but it was fine. And it saved me a lot of pain.

Re: Any girls with previous lower back injuries?
Not PG yet, but this is something I have worried about endlessly.
Just this past summer, I herniated my L5 disc for the 3rd time. The first time was back when I was around 22 years old. Painful, but definitely not like it was this summer. I herniated that same disc at the end of May. When I felt better (about a week later), I fully resumed my normal activities. BIG mistake. The next day, I was in such excrutiating pain that I couldn't hold my own weight standing up--I ALWAYS had to be leaning on something. And sitting upright....forget it. I was that way for just over a month, where the only "comfortable" position was laying down with a pillow under my legs.
Since I know that the discs get weaker and more prone to injury with every herniation, I'm really scared what'll happen when I do get pregnant.

Re: Any girls with previous lower back injuries?
I really agree with Calla when she said that the pains and pressures change constantly. I thought I was doomed (I have had two surgeries and a lumbar spinal fusion) with sciatic pain but it stopped shortly into my second trimester. Then I never had a problem until the few last few weeks. I was a scheduled c-section. You will get through it and it will be all worth it! I hope you feel better!
