Any experience with sleep apena tests?

My nephew who is 3 is having an in home sleep apena test to see if he has it. If he has it the ENT has talked about removing his tonsils and aenoids. Does anyone have any experience with this? What can my SIL expect? Thanks.

Re: Any experience with sleep apena tests?

I'm not familiar with child apnea, but I just had a sleep study for myself a few weeks ago at a sleep center.
They hook up a bunch of wires to monitor everything going on, and based on the results of the test, they determine the route to take to fix the problem. A home study may have much less wires. Possibly just a chest strap or two, I'm not sure.

For DC, they are quicker to remove the tonsils and adenoids. For adults, they rarely do. There are CPAP machines, which is a mask that goes over the nose and forces air in, to keep the airway open. There are also mouth pieces that adjust the way the jaw is held, which also keeps the airway more open.

Re: Any experience with sleep apena tests?

I'm a respiratory therapist so I do have some training in sleep studies. I'm not familiar with the at-home tests, but I assume it's similar to the tests at the clinic where you are hooked up to an EEG monitor (buttons on the head), a pulse oximieter (usually on the finger, toe, or ear), EKG (on the chest), and respiratory monitor (also on the chest). I don't know if they do all that for children, I would think for at home they might just use the pulse ox and respiratory monitors. Similar to the ones they use for infants. With kids, sleep apnea is usually due to a structural problem and that is why they usually require surgery. Adults are more generally treated with sleep apena machines.
