Antibiotics and behavior
DD who is about to turn 4 has been an absolute psychopath the last 3-4 days. She's no angel normally, but her terrible behavior the last few days has been unbelievable. Overly defiant, tantrums, flailing, screaming on the ground, kicking, punching, making outrageous demands and commands. We don't give in and it escalates to sheer lunacy. I mean straight jacket crazy! We are trying to think what this could suddenly be attributed to, and we can only come up with the antibiotic she's on for bronchitis (Zithromax). She's taken it in the past, but I don't recall this type of reaction to it? Has anyone had his experience with their child?

I would be more inclined to think that it's the bronchitis NOT the antibiotic causing the behavior. Has she had a fever? She's probably been REALLY uncomfortable which is making her that much more upset... and if she's typically "no angel" then it makes complete sense that she'd be acting up even more when not feeling well.

Id agree with you, yet she hasn't had a fever in 3 days, the cough sounds 100% better, she's not nearly as congested or uncomfortable as she was at the onset. Ahhhhhh!! I dunno what it is. Today was her last day of the meds, so I'm hoping to see a big change in her over the day or 2.

Re: Antibiotics and behavior
It could be the red dye that is in it... She may be reacting to that. My son was ok with red dye up until he was 3 and then his behavior changed dramatically whenever he had it.

I also would wonder if the increase is just her releasing all the extra energy she has now that she's feeling better... I'm always amazed at the things that can affect a child's behavior. And yes, maybe the red dye... No one I knew ever had a reaction to it, but it's something I have heard of.

I agree with the dye. My DD is on amoxicillin right now and she is batsh!t crazy right now. I'm almost certain it's the dye in it. I took my kids off dye and when my DD has red dye she is off the wall crazy. And her behavior is not that great to begin with. But now that she's on these mess her attitude and behavior is a thousand times worse.

Yes! My daughter is in a terrible mood while on AB. And no, I don't think its the illness itself because she has been sick nemerous times without AB and did not behave the same way.

Ask the pharmacist to leave them out.

Thanks. I can call the pharmacist and have him add "no dye" to her profile? I don't need some special permission from her pediatrician to do this, do I?

Dc were on Zithromax several times and they were insane on it! DS' ADHD was even worse and I mentioned it to the doctors and they didn't believe it. I will never put them on that again. We use other antibiotics instead now.
