Another thing you should never do....

Step into a shower that's only been used by a man with blinders on.

I was at the apt all day (you know, the one I'm paying for but not living in until after the wedding?) and wanted to take a shower... i haven't even OPENED the shower there in a month, but Rich uses it everyday.

I almost vomited on the floor right then and there.

I was greeted with a red film/spots all over the shower. At first I was Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon , thinking it was some kind of paint or makeup or something but when I scrubbed it with the scrub brush, it didn't come off!!! I then figured it was some sort of toxic mold, so I suited up with every rubber glove we had, then googled.

Luckily, it only appears to be this:

Red stains – are most often caused by iron (rust) in the water. Testing is needed to determine the amount and the type of iron you have. Iron in water may be: ferrous or ferric. As little as 0.3 parts per million can turn your white clothes a yellow/brown and leave a reddish/brown stain or “slime” in your toilets, tub, shower and sinks. When your water is “hard,” iron stains can be even worse.

I had to run steaming hot water for a few, then clorox the crap out of it.

I asked Rich when the last time he cleaned it was, and of course, I got "Uh, it's cleaned everyday when i use it. I use really hot water when i shower."

ewwwwwwwwwwwwww

So we've learned that dirty grout on the tile floor bother him, but some strange red sea on the floor has no effect! Interesting....

Does anyone know if I can do anything about the water?

Thanks

I installed a whole-house water softener, and use rust-inhibiting salt, and that cleared up the hard water, and the rust.

They have smaller ones for just the showerhead...

$50 for this example.

Not all showerhead filters filter out rust, though, so just look at what it says it will filter.

We have the same problem. We put a filter on our water pump, but I'm sure you can get one for the shower head- you just have to make sure it says that it filters out iron.

We use this gadget but I think it mainly filters out chlorine. I change the filter about every 2 months or when the water pressure starts to get low.
