Another Tattoo Spinoff: Tattoo "Snobs"
Have you ever met one? Someone who judges your tattoos in terms of how well they are done, how much fame the artist has, the type of artwork etc.?
I only ask b/c DH is heavily tattooed and when I go with him to parties at tattoo shops or art openings, I kind of notice a tattoo snobbery. The tattooed judging one another by their tattoos, like a secret competition. I would rather be completely tattoo-less than have a little something going on at one of these affairs. I can only imagine the judgement.
Has anyone else ever encountered a tattoo snob? Am I just crazy?
Discuss.
Edited: spelling.

Re: Another Tattoo Spinoff: Tatto "Snobs"
i'm a complete tattoo snob. i have tattoos that are done very well and have seen way too many horrible tattoos out there. people don't do their research/pick tattoos off the walls and i think its a little ridiculous. at least the part of picking tattoos off the wall. i am in a "scene" where tattoos are very common and have friends that are amazing tattoo artists. i guess that's kinda why i'm a tattoo snob. i do laugh when i see terrible tattoos and judge 100%

I don't really care all that much about what other's do to themselves.
One person's trash is another person's treasure. Tattoos are generally personal.

My DH's Best Man and his GF are TOTAL tattoo snobs. The GF snickers and laughs at (mostly girls) who have "tramp stamps," singular ankle tattoos, anything tribal etc.
Off topic, I was going to get a calf piece done this week to cover up three smaller tattoos, but I got a BFP (Yay!) and therefore had to cancel. Of course, DH is scooping up my booked hours. Blah!

I have not yet encountered anyone who has been a tatto snob to me. Mine is still new though.
I do appreciate a good tattoo though. Detail, color, design, location. I would call my newbie self a snob.

While I don't think I've knowingly come in contact with any tattoo snobs, I'm sure I have at one point or another.
The funny part is that I fall into ALL the categories you mentioned and I have to laugh. I have a "yin/yang" like tattoo on my lower back (a la tramp stamp), I have a tribal piece on my hip/belly region and I have a singular ankle band. Mind you, all my tattoos have significant meaning - to me. As far as I'm concerned that's ALL that counts, not what someone else thinks.
I find a great amount of irony in the judgement made by the tattoo snobs b/c as far as I'm concerned they're just as bad and judgemental as those who judge ALL of us who have tattoos.
Who is ANYONE to judge?

I agree. After reading through these tattoo threads, I thought of the BM, GF et al. and posted. I was at a Yankee game with my brother, DH and BM a couple of years ago. There was a very pretty girl sitting in front of us. When she got up to cheer or something, her shirt went up and revealed a splash of tiny stars across her lower back--I thought it was so pretty, then I saw BM pointing it out to DH and laughing. I thought it was pretty stupid considering her has stars tattooed on his FINGERS! He and his GF have made me feel uncomfortable about my ankle piece and two symbols. The only reason I was going to get a cover up (before my BFP-YAy!) is because the symbols were for an ex-boyfriend that died in an accident and at this point in my life, decided I want to erase the permanent markings of that time in my life.

See, that's what I don't get. At some point even those who are heavily tattooed started off with that "first piece", so why judge?
Just b/c there are people out there who chose to only get one or two tattoos doesn't make them less of a tattoo enthusiast.
Plus, for people who are supposed to be "open minded" I think being judgemental about other people's tattoos is completely close minded and hypocritical.

Re: Another Tattoo Spinoff: Tattoo "Snobs"
I will admit I can be a tattoo snob. As I probably revealed in my earlier post, when someone shows me a tat that is very obviously bad work I will kind of to myself. I guess it is because I personally am very selective about who I let tattoo me, and when someone does the, "I have ink too" I wonder if they think mine looks like theirs....KWIM?
I don't, however, laugh or make fun of them. It is on their body now and unless they want to cover it up or fix it, it is there forever. I would never be that disrespectful to someone.

Re: Another Tattoo Spinoff: Tattoo "Snobs"
it's not that i'm snobby cause someone has 1 or 2 tattoos. it's how they're done. where they're placed (some tattoos look terrible in certain spots and i'm not saying the "tramp stamp" im saying it would look stupid to get like a t-rex on your lower back where i guess it would loook better on your arm or something (bad example) it just doesn't fit or fill out the space there. kwim?

I only have one -- but I love it and it looks pretty. It's in a place that doesn't show, so I haven't come across any snobs....I think I would just laugh that off, though. There are all kinds of snobs -- car snobs, house snobs, shoe snobs, etc. I don't pay those kind of people any mind.

Congrats on the BFP!
And I totally agree with Kara (Kittythestray). I got a tattoo on my lower back 10 years ago...before they started calling it a "tramp stamp" (or at least before I ever heard that term)

I haven't really noticed if I met any. I really don’t care what others think, I have a lower back tattoo and I got it 16 years ago. Now they call it a tramp stamp, who knew??
People don’t know what your circumstances are so they shouldn’t judge. Maybe that single ankle tattoo is in honor of a loved one who died. Maybe they almost lost that leg in an accident and that spot is significant to them.
Here's a 'for instance' - you have a tattoo that has straight lines and a circle in it. One artist may draw the stencil with a ruler and compass and tattoo it perfectly. You get the same tattoo by a 90 year old traditional Polynesian banging it on you with a stick ‘old school’ so the lines are not perfectly straight. If you’re a true tattoo snob then you should look at the traditional tattoo with awe and respect, but since you’re too busy judging something you know nothing about you just snicker that the lines aren’t perfect. So, there’s my thought on snobbery, no one knows someone else’s story. The 'you' being a general 'you' not aimed at anyone in particular.
Exactly the point I was trying to make only you said it better!
Thank you Kara.

You are awesome.
Most of the people that I know who have tattoos are kind of tattoo snobs.
I don't think it is about tattoos so much as it is about human nature. I think people have their 'things' and like to think that they know a thing or two more about those 'things' than other people. I think it stems from a desire to seperate yourself or to be an 'expert' in some area.
Eh. Whatever. I don't care what kind of tattoo you have. I can think it's good or bad or indifferent - but it isn't on my body!
