Another stacked cake question
When putting the dowels in the cake how do you get thur the cake boards? You are supposed to put each layer on a board right and keep it there when you stack it? Or am I misunderstanding the stacked cake instructions on Wilton?

Re: Another stacked cake question

Nope. You use the dowels to support the lower tier from the weight of the tier above it. I usually place one in the middle, and then 4-6 around it for support. Then, if it's a fondant covered cake, I apply a dab of buttercream on top of the dowel to help the two tiers stat together. Finally, I place the tier onto the bottom cake.

Re: Another stacked cake question
Ok I think I finally get it, you cut the dowels to fit just in the one layer, put the next layer on, put cut dowels into that and then place the top layer on it. Each layer has a cake board under it. Then you sharpen a dowel and put it in the entire cake from the top down.
Is this correct? Sometimes I am a little thick, lol.
Also - I am using buttercream under the fondant, and was planning on using it with 1/2 butter and 1/2 shortening. After I put the fondant do I need to refrigerate or keep it out? When is the earliest I can put the fondant on this, the party is on Sunday at 2:00. We have parties all weekend and I want to be able to do some stuff in advance.
Thanks!

Exactly....except that I don't use one large dowel through the whole cake.
After I cover a cake with fondant, I leave it out. During the summer, I try to keep it in air conditioning, but never in the fridge. You can put the fondant on a day or two in advance. The good thing about fondant is that it preserves the cake underneath it.

I am making 3 cakes for this weekend. The stacked one is for my niece's graduation party. Another one is a Lightening McQueen Cake for my nephew's birthday and then a Wipeout cake for my other nephew's birthday.

Thank you, sorry it has taken me so long to figure it out, lol.
We have central a/c so I will leave it in the house to right before, glad that I can do it friday then since we have a bunch of stuff going on that weekend.

Re: Another stacked cake question
Has anyone ever used non-bendy straws to stack?
I peruse the wilton forums & a lot of the people there have said that the straws work just as well for 2 tier cakes.
