Another spinoff re: looks (haha sorry Em!)
who has the power to judge who is hot hotter hottest?
when we ask...what makes someone hot? who holds the criteria...the measuring stick?
who do we seek approval from?
ETA: I mean internally...when we are wondering...am I beautiful am I hot....where do you pull our standards from...

i think it's all about personal preferences
there are traits that i find hot (i.e. scruffy facial hair) that some women find repulsing

You really can't-it's subjective.
For example, I don't think Eva Longoria is hot (frankly I find her quite ordinary) but she was number 1 on Maxims hot 100 last year.
I think Anderson Cooper is white hot and other might think huh?

sadly i think we pull our standards, most of the time, with with society & media deems is "hot". like for example---people magainze has the "Sexiest Man Alive" contest---but who says who they pick is sexy?
i also think that some of it, individually, comes from just a personal ideas. for example---there are those out there for whatever reason are only attracted to certain body characteristics of others. like me personally---whenever i dated a man---i ONLY dated guys with dark hair---no blondes for me---cause i just don't find them attractive for some reason!
i think when we look in the mirror--we are our toughest critics---and seeing magaiznes and ads showing "perfect" bodies that we are told "this is what is hot" makes us think we need to be THAT to be attractive.

I do this to myself all the time.
I keep trying to remember that at one point, lush, voluptuous women were thought to be beautiful, and now they are not????why...b/c someone else said so...
and why am I comparing myself...or even beating myself up b/c of it????

probably from our peer groups subconsciously with a bit of personal preference thrown in.

I agree with Melissa too, our measuring stick comes from what society has deemed as beautiful...what we see in magazines, tv, movies, etc.

People think I'm CRAZY when I tell them who I think is hot...
If you are wondering: It's Rudy Guiliani  ...Go ahead, think I'm CRAZY! I get it all the time haha. But I can't help it - that cute Italian cold-cut drives me WILD!! 
Then, I look at some celebs and wonder what everyone else is seeing.
