Another spinoff: Are you different from the norm at work?

I saw on the discrimination post that a lot of people say they are in male dominated fields, or they're one of the only people without children. Are you pretty much in the main demographic at your job, or are you different in some way?

I would say at my current job, the way things have shaken out, I'm pretty much the norm. There are more women than Men. Age range for my job is like 24-34, which I'm right in the middle of, and lots of people married and having babies in the last few years. Everyone has a BA, most do not have advanced degrees. So I am pretty much in the norm.

When I started I was one of the older people and there was a lot of turnover, but they changed the way they hire and they really don't hire people right out of college anymore, and on my team at least, there has been less turnover. There are other positions that skew a little bit older, but for my job, I'm right in the same age/life stage/education level as everyone else.

Re: Another spinoff: Are you different from the norm at work?

I'm different in that I'm in a mostly male dominated field and most of the people I work with are techincial and I am not.
We are all around the same age- I seem to be in the middle- some older, some younger than me.

I'm the same in the sense that I can socialize well with the "boys" and hold my own in most situations here- social and professional

Re: Another spinoff: Are you different from the norm at work?

When i first started my job, I was literally the youngest (not counting interns). And I work with Engineers and Architects so it's very male dominated.

I just turned 28 and I feel like I've become MORE like a peer in the past few years since we are homeowners, got married, and now about to have my first child. Now I feel like I have more in common with my coworkers.

At one of my jobs, I'm the youngest. At my other job, I'm in the middle age wise.

At both of my jobs, there are about a dozen or so women. One of the offices has one man, and the other has three.

When I started here, I was one of the youngest. I'm still on the younger side, but I'm creeping toward the norm! Chat Icon Somebody stop me! Chat Icon

ETA: And we're filled with women- I think we have 4 male secretaries in total. The group of attorneys/paralegals is pretty evenly mixed. Most of our managers are female. Maybe that's why they throw all the work at the childless people!

Male dominated field here, though in my office of five, there are two females and three males. I am the youngest, but the oldest is not more than ten years older. All but one have children and are married.

I work from home. There are 13 people around the country that do what I do. Almost all are in their 30's-40's some have children some don't. All are women except for 1 manChat Icon

At the corporate office I think the average age is around 25 and pretty evenly split between men and women. 2 of the highest executives in my company are women.

I'm the "New Yorker" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I kid you not.

I hear them talk about me all the time "Well she's from NY, you know how they are" or to my face "This isn't New York" and since I'm from corporate I obviously don't need a pay raise since I was over paid over there (hi, I took a 25k pay decrease). and Yeah, I was BORN here (state not city) and you WEREN'T (WI, FL, VA, LA, TN, IL, CA, etc). Heck 75% of our office wasn't BORN or raised in this city. Militarytown, USA? sheesh!

Otherwise I guess I'm average. We all have only HS diplomas in my dept with maybe one or two exceptions. The producers have degrees. Age wise I'm the lower end 3rd youngest in the office. All of us are (or were) married. All of us have children for the whole office (with only ONE exception).

I have more professional designations and I'm less years in the industry by about 10yrs maybe but I have 15yrs so I'm not green. I also stand out since I don't do car dealerships which is a primary business type for our office. I'm the "non dealer gal"

Well, at 44 I'm one of the younger people here (!) and the only one with a young child currently (others have children but the youngest are teens).

Other than that, no, I'm not so different.
