Another s/o to newborns and public
I thought I'd run errands (grocery shopping in partcular) during the day so DH wouldn't have to worry about it after work. Plus, it would give me an opportunity to get out of the house for a little while. After thinking about all of the germs/public places issues, now I'm not so sure.
If you're not planning on taking the baby out for several weeks/months, what are you doing about grocery shopping? Will you just send DH out to get things?
ETA: We have no family nearby so dropping the baby off somewhere isn't an option.

I actually used Peapod the first few months not because of germs but because it was too hard for me with the infant carseat. The Chicco doesn't fit in the front part or the cart. I have control issues about grocery shopping

Re: Another s/o to newborns and public
I'm not currently prego, but my DD is 13 months & we made sure we went shopping b4 I left for the hospital (for non-perishable food) & then when I got home DH had off from work that first week & I remember him running out for small stuff & then my mom was here too.
I do remember I didn't take DD out to a supermarket for at least a month or more...its something how strangers feel the need to touch a newborn
Also I found the infant seat doesn't usually fit in the top of the shopping cart so well, so we'd put her in the back of the cart which always led to a 2nd cart/bringing her stroller (DH) or shopping a little at a time, piling it around her.

Re: Another s/o to newborns and public
I am lucky to have family close by, usually when a new baby is born everyone takes turns shopping, cooking, cleaning doing anything to help out, so the new Mom and Dad have less to worry about.
I honestly have no idea how I am going to feel about taking the baby out once s/he is here, I think I am going to have to play it by ear.

DH would go, or other family members were more than happy to go for me.

I went to the store myself. My doctors dont believe in shielding the baby completely from public as long as people arent touching your baby and there in there travel seat in the cart they are perfectly fine from the germs I went to the stores with them right away and both my kids were born in the winter and so will this one..

Re: Another s/o to newborns and public
Dh food shops most of the time, so he will be doing it while I am home with DD, or I will food shop while Dh is home with DD.

I will either go myself during the day with the baby or when DH gets home from work, I will run out quickly by myself & leave the baby with DH.

I usually went by myself (dropped off baby with my mom or left him at home with my boyfriend), or just made a shopping list and had my boyfriend do the shopping for us.

Re: Another s/o to newborns and public
My DH loves to go grocery shopping. If he doesnt do it, I plan to use Peapod or I will wait for my mom to come over to watch the baby so I can run to the store. Shopping with a newborn would be too much!

Re: Another s/o to newborns and public
My parents stopped by twice a week, so I went by myself during that time. Sometimes I went by myself after DH got home from work. I didn't take DS to supermarkets or other big stores or malls till he was over 8 wks old.
I found becoming a mom such an overwhelming 24/7 task those first few months, I actually loved getting out by MYSELF for half an hour or so to run to the supermarket or Target.

Re: Another s/o to newborns and public
DH and I went grocery shopping together for the first few months....we used to do that when we first got married too. I pushed the baby, he pushed the cart! It was nice down time together and DS loved looking around at all the new stuff so he never made a peep! DS ran all errands with us.
It wasnt until I went back to work that I considered taking "short cuts" (just for lack of a better term) but instead I decided to work PT.
For me I will say that once I started going out and doing normal stuff with DS, and surviving, I felt like a more confident parent!
