Another question.. sorry Im learning!
Does anyone know if IVF/IUI is only possible with a certain sperm count?
For example, does the count have to be 10 million or better in order for it to even work?
With every question I have, Im realizing we need to go see an RE...

from my experience IVF can be done with a lower count if you do ICSI...this way they pick the best sperm after they are washed and will fertilize the egg in the petri dish.....then insert during ET....
ask about clomid and HcG for your guy....my DH is on it and helps sooooooooooooooooo much!

Re: Another question.. sorry Im learning!
DH has low count, morph, and motility due to bilateral vericoceles. We did 3 IUI's at one RE where the counts once the sperm was washed were less than 5 million, which is Way below optimal for this procedure. However we have now moved onto IVF, where with ICSI 18 of my eggs fertilized.

This may be an elementary question.. but doesnt it only take one? lol If they do ICSI, arent they only looking for the good ones and inject that one sperm into that good egg?
Whats the biggest difference between IVF and IUI?
Good luck to you!!!

Re: Another question.. sorry Im learning!
iui is closest to regular BD. it can be done medicated if you have ovulation issues, or unmedicated if you ovulate naturally with no issues. basically around the time of ovulation the doctor just inserts the sperm into your uterus. this leaves the sperm much closer to the egg than regular BD which has to swim up into your uterus and tubes to get to the egg. they will do IUI with lower sperm counts but from what ive heard (no real experience) they aren't very successful with extremely low counts. also the sperm gets "washed" by the doctors so only the strongest survive.
with IVF they mature as many eggs as possible with meds. then the eggs are removed and the sperm either injected into them (ICSI) or they are allowed to naturally fertilize. ICSI can be done with VERY few sperm and the sperm do not have to be perfect. you wont know if they are chromosomally normal, but if you have morphology or motility issues, this can be overcome with ICSI. after fertilization the eggs are given either 3 or 5 days to split and divide. then the strongest 1, 2 or 3 embryos (or more depending on the doctor and the issue) are put back in. the rest of the embryos can be frozen for future use.

You're the best! Thanks so much! The dr did talk about icsi with us, I was hoping we could do that with IUI instead of IVF (if we get to that point) but I guess day by day and step by step... Ill know more next week after his u/s. Thanks again!
