Another Confederate flag?

Yeah I saw another one. But THIS time, on a bumper sticker with a very postive message that addressed the question I posed in the other thread

Do you think a person could wave a Confederate flag without an association to the Klan? There HAS to be people who are simply proud to be from the south without that negative connotation.

Re: Another Confederate flag?

I don't get it. The Confederate flag represents so much, yet people equate it with just being about slavery.

It's a part of our history

(well, not MINE, since my family can be dated back to New York for a long time...but it's part of American History)

I do agree to an extent, and if I am not mistaken, isn't this still the state flag of Georgia?

Not unlike the Swastika, which is not exclusively a Nazi symbol and was not originally a symbol of hate, the Confederate Flag has morphed into one single negative connotation.

I always do wonder, though, how many of the people who chose to display the confederate flag are coming from a place of historical pride rather than a place of hatred.

Really? I lived in the South for over 10 years and can count on one hand the number of confederate flags I saw. (Thankfully.)

And I wholeheartedly agree that there is a vast difference between people who fly the flag for heritage and those who fly it for hate.

Very. I believe, specifically, a confucian symbol.

Very. I believe, specifically, a confucian symbol.

"Archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period. An ancient symbol, it occurs mainly in the cultures that are in modern day India and the surrounding area, sometimes as a geometrical motif and sometimes as a religious symbol. It has long been widely used in major world religions such as Hinduism, Roman Catholicism, Buddhism and Jainism."

"The word swastika is derived from the Sanskrit svastika (in Devanagari, ????????), meaning any lucky or auspicious object, and in particular a mark made on persons and things to denote good luck. It is composed of su- (cognate with Greek e?-, eu-), meaning "good, well" and asti, a verbal abstract to the root as "to be" (cognate with the Romance copula, coming ultimately from the Proto-Indo European root *h1es-); svasti thus means "well-being." The suffix -ka intensifies the verbal meaning or confers the sense of 'beneficial', and svastika might thus be translated literally as "that which associated with well-being," corresponding to "lucky charm" or "thing that is auspicious."[1] The word first appears in the Classical Sanskrit (in the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics)."

Re: Another Confederate flag?

Interesting information about confederate flags..

From Wiki

I posted this b/c it makes reference to the square flag vs. the rectangle one. The rectangle flag it seems was intended to be the first flag of the united states, not meant necessarily as a sign of hate. The square flag seems that it was originally used to further distingush troops on the battlefield, sincce the previous flag was too closely resembled to the Union flag at the time.

Did your DH boke on the car that had the bumper sticker?

Re: Another Confederate flag?

Since my neighbors fly the Confederate flag, I am 100% positive it has zero to do with the KKK. It is a sign of support for their Southern heritage. Chat Icon

i really like the message on that bumper sticker - i think it's easy for those who are not from the south to misunderstand or misinterpret the reasons people fly the confederate flag - i, for one, had no idea it was an issue of pride or heritage until leslie posted the previous thread. having a bumper sticker like this on your car is a great way to clarify things - at the same time subtly showing your distaste for those who fly the flag in support of slavery or the KKK.

my boyfriend is from the south and has a DIXIE FLAG belt buckle.

he NEVER calls it the confederate flag ever. always rebel or dixie to him.

i used to have a negative association with it before i knew him. now i realize it has NOTHING to with hate whatsoever.

hey, i mean i named my DOG after it!!!!!!! and i have a dixie flag hanging up in my kitchen right now.

Re: Another Confederate flag?

I would say for most it is about Southern pride....

and here's an interesting tidbit... for many recent years, it was the good 'ol Union state of PENNSYLVANIA that had the most ACTIVE chapters of the KKK. You can't say all Southerners are still in favor of the things the Confederate flag used to stand for.... in fact, slavery was not the only reason there was a Cilvil War. Most southerners were more annoyed with the unfair taxes placed on them as well as not having accurate representation in Congress. The Civil War was NOT just about slavery, so for some people, it's Southern pride and that's it.
