Another Christening spin-off- your thoughts....
My mother made the Christening gown that I and my siblings wore from her wedding gown. When I mentioned this to a friend, she said, "Your brother wore a DRESS?" I explained, "No, it's a Christening gown- not a dress."
When my brother and his wife announced they were pg, they laughed at the idea that if they had a son he would wear the gown. I found out I was pg a month later and never thought my child (male or female)WOULDN'T wear the gown.
I'm expecting a daughter, so I guess the point is moot. But, does NO ONE put their son in a Christening gown? Was my mother some gender-confused freak in the seventies?
Thoughts?

i am positive that one of brothers wore a christening gown but i think the youngest wore a mini suit - I could be wrong though
if it was a gown that had sentimental value then I would more than likely want to use it regardless of sex

my DH was christened in a linen gown that has been worn by his father and many other family members in between. i know MIL showed it to me and assumes i'm going to christen my DC in it but i haven't given it much thought... i also have my christening gown

Of course boys have wore christening gowns, especially when they are still infants. I think it's completely acceptable and I think that gown made from your mother's dress is such a beautiful idea. My nephews were just christened in white satin romper-like outfits only because they are 10 months and gowns wouldn't have worked.

That is silly I have seen lots of boys in church wearing adorable christening gowns. They do have christening suits in the stores as an alternative but I don't think there is anything wrong with a boy in a christening gown.

My DS will be baptised in a gown. It is the old tradition. I am having a piece of my wedding dress shawl sewn into it. Luckily for me, my wedding dress had blue in it

I'm making the Christening gown from my wedding gown. WHen I told DH that I was waiting until I knw if it was a girl or boy he asked why. I told him I'd make a little suit out of it if it was a boy. He said 'No way, every baby wears the same thing!' So, I'm making it simple. If our next child is a girl, I might add more of the bodice beading.

hmm.. depends on the gown i guess. My sister and I wore the same christening gown, althought it was foot lenght not those 3 feet long flowing ones.... When my niece was born she wore it, but not my nephew afterwards,my sister got him a boys outfit with a barret that matched. I think if the gown had been longer it may have been used.

I thought that all babies were Christened in a gown. I'm Jewish, so I doubt that my answer counts. I have been to Christenings, though.

Christening gowns for either sex is common.
It's only in the last few decades that they make those little suits (of which I'm not a fan).
