Another Breastfeeding Question

Sorry all!

Because DS was premie and having issues latching, the lactation consultant had me using a nipple shield when feeding. At almost 1 month old, I do not believe DS needs this anymore, and he seems to latch with no problem on the 2 instances I tried to not use it. My concern is, and it might be stupid, but when I use the shield, I can see a store of milk in the shield, but when I don't use it, I can't see anything (obviously) and of course that makes me nervous that he's not getting anything.

Those who have used the nipple shield, how and when did you wean off it, if you did wean off it?

Also, I was supplementing very little after each feeding with a small amount of formula up to the last appointment with DS's pediatrician, where he had gained 11oz in 1 week (small amount less than 1 oz each feed). The doctor then told me that I could cut out the supplement and just make sure he's having 6 wet diapers a day. So based on this, I should assume that as long as he's getting at least 6 wet diapers (usually much more) and his solid diapers (usually 3-4) that he is getting enough to eat.... correct? I have a hard time letting go of control, if you couldn't tell.

I cannot provide any advice on the nipple shield. As for him getting enough milk, I'd just feed him on demand. That will ensure your supply is sufficient. Supplementing will only hurt it.

Good job mama!

As long as he is gaining wet and having wet diaper he is getting enough milk. If you want to make sure that you have milk for him (to put your mind at ease) you could manually express a little before you start nursing. I have no experience using a nipple shield but as long as you have a good latch you are probably good--check the kellymom website it is really helpful.

Re: Another Breastfeeding Question

If he is swallowing while he is eating something is coming out! Towards the end of BFing when I was weaning I knew I was drying up because he would just constantly do the sucking/stimulation phase and never swallow (poor guy!)

thanks all!!! I'm just so paranoid about it because my bff never produced anything and I'm scared of not feeding him enough.... I know I'm producing, just hoping its enough! His little frame is getting chubby, so I guess its safe to assume he is gaining.

This. You can usually hear gulping and most of the time you can see milk in the corner of their mouths. When I first started breastfeeding I was also paranoid about this and seeing the milk in the corner of the baby's mouth reassured me. Of course if he is having wet/dirty diapers you know he is getting what he needs. Sounds like you're doing great!

As long as you hear swallowing on and off he's getting milk. Also the diapers are a good indicator. He sounds like he's a good eater so I'm sure he'll let you know if he's not satisfied! Also keep in mind that a growth sport is probably right around the corner so if you do find him wanting to eat around the clock all of a sudden that could be why.
