amex and visa gift card question

i understand that these gift cards have a fee, but do the gift cards lose value if they aren't used?

is there a better (cheaper) way to gift money without it being a store gift card that isn't a check?

Cash, no extra fee and never loses value. Im not sure why so many people are afraid to just give cash. I would prefer cash over GC any day

I guess some people feel weird about giving cash outright, so that's why they give gift cards.

OP- Pretty sure the only money gift card that doesn't have a fee is a TD Bank GC but you have to be a member there.

I usually end up giving my DD's daycare staff around the holidays Target GC's because I know pretty much everyone goes there lol.

Also, if you're mailing something, usually GC over cash. If you have the # of the GC, you can always place a stop if recepient doesn't get it.

OP, I usually do AMEX. Giftcards don't lost value over time. Some VISAs charge a "non-use" fee.

Amazon isn't necessarily a no-name giftcard, but I think people can get way more there then with any other store gift card, so I usually give it as a gift -- no fee for amazon gift cards.

The $ on most gift cards doesn't go away. I just went through a stack of gift cards from 10+ years ago and was able to get 561 that was still valid on a combination of cards - visa, amex, gap, old navy, target, walmart, toys r us, ulta, victorias secret, macys, etc.

Re: amex and visa gift card question

One reason I prefer to receive a gift card over cash or a check is that when I get cash or a check I end up just depositing it in my checking account and paying bills with it.
If I get a gift card, I am forced to spend it on something fun for myself !
