Am I wrong to be irritate by this?
My niece's b-day was yesterday and my sil invited everyone over to their house for cake etc. Everyone except me and dh (i found out everyone else was invited via facebook). We live in manhattan and they live on Long island, so we're not that far away. I just feel like couldn't they have waited to celebrate until the weekend so dh and I could come? She does this every year and it's really starting to irk me. Am I wrong to be a little upset by this?

I think you should be invited & given the opportunity to turn down the invite.
However I could easily see this happening (and am sure it did happen) with my family. We have inpromptu parties all of the time.
If it happens every year, to head it off at the pass, why not ask her SIL earlier when you are celebrating because you'd like to make the trip out.

I dont think they need to plan it for a weekend, just so you can make it (although I would), but I do think that they should DEFINITELY extend an invite.

I agree.
Since this happens every year, why don't you call ahead and ask when they are celebrating?
Does everyone else live on LI? They may only be inviting the "locals" and not realize that you would come all the way from Manhattan.

Re: Am I wrong to be irritate by this?
thanks all, my nephew's birthday is in september and i think i will ask in advance and explain that we'd like to come. i don't want to be too confrontational and ask why she didn't even invite us for this one, so i think expressing interest in coming might be a subtle way to let her know we'd like to be involved.
and yes, everyone else lives no more than 10 minutes away. by everyone i mean her parents, her sister, my parents and my sister which is all the immediate family.

I think that's a good idea-just let her know that you would like to come to your nephews party, could she give you a little notice on when it is so you can make the trip out.
In her shoes, I would make the party for a weekend if I knew you wanted to come out. But if she doesn't no big deal, at least you can make arrangements to go.
Also, in her defense, I know some people think everyone in the world should want to come to their kid's birthday party. But there are others (myself and maybe your SIL) who don't want to assume that our kid is the center of everyone else's world and don't want to put people out or make them feel as though they have to come and are so excited when people make special arrangements to celebrate with us.

Re: Am I wrong to be irritate by this?
My family always celebrates on weekends so everyone is more able to come.
My inlaws feel that you should celebrate a child's bday on their specific date. Some years it falls on a weekend and I go. Sometimes it falls on a Tuesday night at 5pm and I can't get home from work in time. So I don't go, and I send my gift along.
It's up to the parents to do what works best for their family. I do think you absolutely should have been extended the invite though.

ITA with both of these points.
They shouldn't have to wait until the wknd to celebrate for you guys. Not trying to be mean at all -- just matter of fact.
They might just assume you wouldn't want to trek out to LI during the week, and you'll get to celebrate when you can on the wknd.
If it keeps happening and you keep feeling "slighted" by it, then as Kara said, I'd call ahead each year and say "So when are you celebrating? Let me know the date & time and see if we can make it. Thanks"
