almost 2 year old smacks hard
ok.... need some help with this.... the "new" thing my 22 month year old DS does is smacks my face (and daddys) so hard when u tell him no....omg it was so embarassing, we were at a familiy halloween party tonite and told him to stop playing with door (of course he didnt listen) so i picked him up to move him and he SMACKED my eye so hard i saw stars..... how do i stop this? ive thought about smacking his hand (but that seems to defeat purpose or teaching him no smacking) or just telling him NO (loud) or ignoring it... he used to bang his head on ground when he was told no and i learned to ignore it and he stopped in about 2 weeks... now he hurts me instead... UGH.... its hard to ignore when i am getting beat up!

Re: almost 2 year old smacks hard
AJ has tried that a few times
Mommy gets super angry and its a very stern, very grim and very scary "NO!" and immediately into time out with "no hitting, time out"
Then to get out of time out "You hurt mommy, mommy is hurt" and she'll rub my face and say "sowy" I ask for and get a hug and kiss then its we move on.
I have absolutely no tolerance for hard hitting. Just doesn't fly in my house. Id say she's done it a handful of times. Each time regardless of how it started (like playing that got carried away) or where we are, its a sudden and immediately harsh reaction.
So far she's gotten the picture pretty clearly for home. School is different since they don't do time out and if you hit a kid they have to say sorry and that's all. I think its school she picked it up. In a way she needs it too, because she is the smallest and often outnumbered. Its a fine line she walks. But no hitting mommy and daddy.

ITA with this . . . although it took my son a while to learn this. Now he gets mad and makes a motion to swing but kinda swings the air b/c he knows better. I don't think he knows how to control his anger! He never hits me though anymore!

My son does this too, especially when we leave a playground or play area and he doesnt want to leave. I grab his hands, and say "no hitting". Sometimes it works....
And yes, it can be very embarassing at times.

Re: almost 2 year old smacks hard
DS was hitting me (and only me) around 15-16 months old. I started giving time outs for hitting. It was extremely effective. He only got a time out a handful of times before he completely stopped hitting me.

Re: almost 2 year old smacks hard
Well - if you know me you might know what I will say....
But for a hit - we gave automatic time outs. No looking at him, talking to him, nothing. We put him somewhere where he could not get away - high chair, pack and play, or if we were at a party or someone's house, DH or I would take him to the car and put him in his car seat and sit in the car with him until he was ready - with no talking.
I am not against a smack on the hand - I have done that a few times to show him what hitting feels like, and it helped stop that behavior as well....
