Allergy Nasal Spray-

My 5 year old ended up in the ER on thursday after a bad allergy attack.. He was having trouble breathing.. He was taking Claritin everyday for 2 weeks and Benadryl as needed. He was getting 2 doses of that a day from last sunday- tuesday. He stopped liking it and by Wednesday, he was a mess... On thursday he was ok for most of the day, except he wasn't eating or drinking. He became very lethargic and pale and then fell asleep. He was working too hard to breathe and off to the ER by ambulance he went.. His tonsils and nasal passages were swollen. Causing the difficulty breathing... He was also dehydrated. Got IV meds and some oxygen. We went to the allergist the next day and was prescribed Nasonex on top of his Claritin.
He has autism so giving him oral meds can be so hard at times.. I am hoping the Nasonex helps but I have been reading some scary stories about side effects... He is pretty sensitive to meds...

Do you give your kids allergy nasal spray? Which ones? Does it help?
I was able to find dye free benadryl tablets that I can crush and put in juice... I was able to get it crushed really fine and he had no issue with it... For now anyway..
It is going to be a long allergy season. I am also dealing with them but I am on all sorts of meds too...

I was just prescibed Flonase for myselft (it's over the counter now too) and the product labeling says it can be taken by children as young as 4.
Supposedly it blocks 6 allerigic substances as opposed to only 1 that the pills block.
It's something you have to use daily though, it's not instant relief.
I'd ask your ped about it.

DD was taking daily FLonase for a few weeks. She didn't mind it- and this is a kid who freaks out when she has to blow her nose

I didn't notice any side effects
