AKC Papers and Pet Stores

I was trying to talk a friend out of buying a puppy from a pet store. He said the dog had AKC papers. Whats the deal with that? Are the papers fake?

If you purchase a puppy, another animal will take it’s place. The mothers of the pups will continue to suffer.

The AKC does not inspect kennels, nor does it vouch for the health or well-being of a puppy.

- Are AKC - registered dogs guaranteed?

No. AKC registered simply means the puppy had two parents of the same breed. The AKC registers dogs and gives them 'papers which help to sell them in pet shops or at breeders’ kennels.


- Does the AKC make money from puppy mills?

Yes, lots. Puppy mills comprise 80% of the AKC’s business. It registered 917,247 puppies in 2003 at the cost of approximately $25.00 per puppy.

it seems like the dog can be AKC registered but still be from a puppy mill... i hope you can convince your friend that rescuing a puppy from a shelter is a better option!!!

thanks, that article is great. but it seems, which surprises me, that the AKC is aware of the puppy mills and is not really against them bc of the $ they are making. I dont understand how they get paid from the sale of a dog at a pet store?

nevermind , I answered my on question. Apparantly the AKC collects money off of the dogs being registered. I found that here
