Advice on Shower this weekend
My family is throwing me a shower this weekend in Central Jersey. I am so excited to know that about 20 people are coming - we aren't as close to this side of the family so I think it is great to get people together. I really don't want to cancel as there aren't many available weekends and it would be impossible to get another date that works for people before the baby is born.
Most of the guest list is from the Somerset or Hamilton area. The place where we are having my shower has power and so far, gas stations have gas in the area.
Here's my questions - I know noone has the the answers, but looking for opinions.
1. Do you think people will ASSUME the shower is cancelled? Should I ask my parents to make phone calls telling them its still going on?
2. How bad do you think driving back into the city will be Sunday night? The shower doesn't end until 5 pm, so we can't get an early start. DH will have to go into the office on Monday - I will prob still be working from home.
3. Do you think the restriction on 3 people per car will be lifted on the weekend?
I think we will try to drive down sat afternoon because we are expecting a lot of traffic.
I know I am so fortunate to have this problem - when so many other people are suffering much worse and I really don't mean to come off as insensitive. It just stinks that my family was able to pull this together (there was A LOT of stress in the planning) and now it might not go as smoothly as hoped.

Advice on Shower this weekend
There is only so much you can do if you can't reschedule and it is what it is. My friend had her bridal shower last year during the hurricane and it was rescheduled. New people were able to make it while others couldn't make the new date.
With the gas issue now it may keep people from not traveling at all regardless if there is gas and power in that location. If people are close to the area then it may not be an issue, but if they are traveling far it may be an issue.
I would notify people that it is still going on and that way you can get a count on who can still make it.
If you are able to avoid manhattan in your travels there I would. I would try to get into Jerzy from the bx or Staten Island. It's a big question mark right now.
I just found out my surprise shower for next weekend may be rescheduled due to the place still not having power. So wont know for a few days myself. Good luck!!

Advice on Shower this weekend
Are there people who will be driv1ing far? Some places still won't have electricity which means no street lights or traffic signals and that could make it difficult/dangerous once it starts getting darker. Gas stations may have gas now but I think they're predicting over the weekend it could become an issue.
There are so many "ifs" that it is really difficult to say. Also the Marathon is this weekend so getting through the city is going to be difficult from the storm alone, add the marathon traffic and closures on there and it might be twice as tough to get through.
Do you know that none of these people are without power/heat/hot water or have storm damage that they will be dealing with? Are they in areas that are safe to get around (I'm not familiar with Jersey). I think the news just said there are 1.8 million people in NJ without power right now.
If you decide you want to continue as planned I would definitely have your parents call people to check to see how they did with the storm and then let them know the shower is still on.
