Advice on dealing with impossible people

I work with someone who is impossible! She is 31 going on 2!!! She is not smart, lazy, and hasn't even bothered to learn our industry or company biz model. Her questions demonstrate this. She also can't seem to wipe her own butt without checking with our manager that it is ok. Object tried several times to talk to her about our working relationship but nothing seems to work. Yesterday was the last straw - she misinterpreted something I said and told our manager that I am trying to throw my work on her. I really didn't want to bring my manager into this but I refuse to let her think that I am trying to pass off my responsibilities. So I explained my frustration and that I have been trying to deal with this on my own but haven't had luck and asked for her suggestions. No response. I did tell the girl I am having issues with that I think we need to have another char but she doesn't even acknowledge what I am saying. So how would you deal with this??? Attempt to have another talk? Leave it alone and turn my head the other way? Something else? I am not the only person who has problems with this girl.

Document everything. The last thing you need is this turning around badly on you. If she is lying or misinterpreting instructions, maybe you should approach your manager from a place of concern. I would go the, "I want to be certain that I am explaining things properly, and that they are being understood....do you have any advice on how to do so with X?"

Good luck. I work with one of those also. It got very ugly very quickly at one point, and almost everything I do now has an aspect of CMA.

Yeah I do. I emailed my manager two days ago to express my frustration and explain that I have tried talking to this girl but nothing seems to work and does she have any suggestions.

Yesterday it got worse. Ironically just 24 hours after being accused of throwing my work on her, she literally throws her responsibilities on me. That was the last straw. I told her that I don't think what she is doing is fair, that we all have deadlines to meet and I do not appreciate her doing this right after she ran to our manager about me. I said I would help but we need to discuss next week and manage our time better. It isn't my fault if she can't meet her deadlines! We are working on a joint project and she tries to tell me that it is MY project and she is just helping. I said no it is OUR project and I have met my deadlines. Well she then tells me that she is very angry that I have said all this and I said I am sorry to hear that you are upset but I am very frustrated and have asked for us to schedule a time multiple times but she is not even acknowledging me.

I could understand if it was just me but there are three other people who have problems with this girl!

Outside of documenting everything, I am not sure there's much else you can do.

She is what she is.

Do you think your manager(s) could be building a case to get rid of her, yet, it's just taking the time to officially do so?

I've been in that position before with having to fire a person and it takes a long time.

I also obviously could not discuss it with the other people I was supervising, who were also aware of the behavior.

Are projects with her an absolute necessity?

Yes, the projects with her are a necessity but there is also a vendor involved who she was liaising with - today I purposely positioned it as 'let me make this easier for you by working with the vendor...' just to minimize my dealings with her and she took the bait. She is such an incredible time waster - today she was calling me to tell me to tell someone else something when she could've just called that person herself.

I know our manager has her own frustrations with this girl too. Me, my manager, my counterpart in Singapore and at least one other person in this office... Chat Icon
