advice: insurance issues with lab work
I have GHI insurance.
I went for my NT scan on April 1.
This past week, I got a bill from the lab that the ante partum testing unit sent my bloodwork to. The bill said that GHI refused to pay for the bloodwork because the lab is not in network.
When I called the testing unit at the hospital to inquire why the blood was sent to a lab that does not take GHI, they said that the lab they sent it to is the only one that does that test and they had no choice. They also stated that someone should have informed me of this prior to the test, which of course they did not.
The fact that they didnt tell me is a moot point as I would have had to have the test anyway.
However...
In any case, does anyone have any experience fighting this sort of thing? Or am I going to have to pay the bill?

Check with your insurance to see if it is your responsibility or your doctor's responsibility to check if the test is covered.
I had this issue with Genetic counseling...turns out it was the doctor's responsibility to verify that they were covered...not mine. (It was also at a hospital-this might be the loophole).

You will probably have to pay the bill but you could most likely get it reduced down if you make it enough of an issue.

I am going trough almost the EXACT same thing with GHI. I have no out of network benefits and have to pay $800 to the lab!!!

I am nervous this is going to happen to me now because I just had the NT scan and I have GHI. I asked my Dr.'s office about this before and they said the same thing... " it's the only lab that does it so it should be covered" mind if I ask how much the bill was so I can prepare. :(

I also got a bill from a lab (ntd) b/c my doc sent it directly to them by mistake. But when I had the bloodwork done I told the nurse that ntd is oon she that they send it to my in network lab and then since the lab can't do the test they willl send it on to ntd. Sine it was the office's mistake they took care of it.
