How does it work to get a family, or two, and you get a list of the gifts their kids want/need for the holidays?

I have a moms group and would love it if we could do something to give back this year.

Yes, you usually get the children's age, sex, size and perhaps a preferred toy. I know my church will specify if the child needs a coat or boots or even warm bedding.

Every christmas we do 2 shoe boxes with Samaritan purse. They get letters from kids with things they want for christmas and distribute them to churches. We sign up in our church foyer and get 2 letters every christmas, return them to the foyer and they get shipped.
The kids do write their ages and shoe sizes, whether s, m, l or xl for clothing requests.

My family has done this for years and it's so sad to read what this kids are asking for... I remember one year the kid was asking for socks ..you can go to the post office to get letters or you can go to a local charity that collects and ask them for a letter.:

Tx all. Where can I do this though? A local church? I'm Jewish so have no clue where to even go to ask.

Ok here I am chiming in:

Count me in, also Definitely contact town hall they should have something. I will also ask my dad if they have something through his hospital to help Vets families

Toys of hope! I think they are in Suffolk. They have a website and you can adopt a family for holidays. We did it last year and it was great! You get background in family and basic needs. It was heartbreaking to see kids ask for winter coats, thermals and warm bedding!! I also learned they were struggling to keep their cat so we got the cat some food too! You can buy for the family and deliver to the organizations warehousE. There are also a bunch of places that do Salvation Army giving trees - churches etc. a few organizations have Amazon wish lists too.

We also do it here every year sort of, my fave thing about LIF!

Thanks everyone! We are going to adopt a family through the vets hospital. We may do it for both thanksgiving (food collection) and the holidays (presents).

FYI - LIF ALWAYS does a family gift drive right here. Someone organizes it, people send private messages that they are in need, the list is put up on a thread, and WE (LIF people) "take one of the families. The organizer gets the gifts to the families.

If you want I would SAY wait until someone organizes it. This way you know the gifts are going DIRECTLY to someone here on Long Island in need.

You can adopt a NY City child through Winter Wishes. We do it every year. That reminds me, I need to sign up this year!

The organization is NY Cares - Winter Wishes program.

ETA : Last year the little girl we adopted asked for a Dog, a Parrott, or a Barbie. Needless to say, we got her a Barbie!
