activities for a long road trip
going to Outer banks, N.C in July. My DS will have just turned 2, and my DD will be 9 1/2 mths. what are some things I can bring in the car to keep them occupied? we have DVD players, but what about some other things. We are planning on leaving in the middle of the night so they sleep, but when they eventually wake-up i want to keep them occupied some how!!

When we drove down to GA a few years ago, spotting things was always our thing. You can make up a bingo board & try to find things. He may be too young to get the BINGO but he can "X" them out.
Talking, singing, reading books (if you can do it w/o getting car sick, if you can't books on tape).
If they were older, Mad Libs is fun.
I know my son feels like if he's not entertained 24/7 it's torture but I think being bored can be a good thing.
Are you making a stop along the way?

For the 2 year old-a DVD player, coloring books and crayons, a travel doodle (DD loved this thing) and lots of snacks.
For the 9 month old-eh, not a lot.
For both I recommend frequent stretches and for the 2 year old a place to run around-some of the rest stops are nice and we just gave DD free reign to run and let out some energy.

We were unexpectedly stuck in traffic for HOURS on Sunday coming home from NJ, so we had to get creative. If your 2 year old knows colors and the alphabet, ask DC to identify them on the cars and trucks surrounding you. It seems like it wouldn't keep them busy that long, but DS loves showing off what he knows, so after he cycled through his toys, this worked.
Kids music or course, books, handheld toys, not sure what else.

Sorry I meant overnight stop... I assumed you'd change diapers at some point.
We left at 3-4am for our trip & it was pretty smooth sailing along the way - except they didn't transition to the car like I hoped. They were so excited, they didn't sleep until about 9am.
