Acid Reflux?
I think my 6 year old DS may have it. How do I go about getting him tested and what do they do?

He had it as a baby and always thought he never outgrew it, but just got better. I think it had some part to do with his eating issues as a baby. Also when he eats anything with sauce he does this cough. It's very slight, but sounds like he's clearing his throat and does it consistently when eating and a little after. Any time he has pizza, pasta, etc. Last night we had lasagna and then had choc for dessert. The last time he had a combo like that he said his heart hurt a little. Last night we had the leftovers and he wound up throwing up (don't blame it on my cooking... LOL). Just once and was fine all night and woke up fine. It's the only thing I can think of. Was thinking of talking to the Ped about it since I have B's well visit coming up. Thoughts?

Acid Reflux?
I would try some manuka honey on toast in the morning on an empty stomach. Do that for a few days, and see if it improves. Really worked on my acid reflux issues that I was scoped for. Also, NSAIDS cause stomach issues, gastritis, and bleeding, all which can lead to GERD (acid reflux), so I would avoid all of those unless absolutely necessary. I also absolutely would try the natural route rather than having your child take PPI's (cause lots of damage down the road).

Re: Acid Reflux?
I'd see a GI. Even if you see your ped, I always find the specialist gets to the resolution faster. My DS saw a GI as a baby when he had reflux and I just took my DD today to the same GI. She already seems happier than after 4 weeks of treatment for her reflux under her ped.

Agreed. Manuka money is awesome. It's really expensive because you need +16 or above. However trader joes sometimes sells it. THe plainview one had his weekend. It's only +10 and also only like $9 but I think it's better than nothing.

I get it at Wild By Nature, and pay about $35 for a tub, but it's worth it IMO. I don't use it everyday, only when I feel like I'm having a constant issue with reflux, which hasn't happened in a few months.

What brand? I use haddrell's of Cambridge, paid around $40 on Amazon for 1.1lb. The trader joes one I actually use in the shower to wash my face! But just wanted to throw out there bc everyone's budget is different and also in a pinch it's faster than ordering online.

Re: Acid Reflux?
I will tell you now if you start to ask questions at the ped. they will charge you for a sick visit. DR. L is probably going to tell you to eliminate those items and see how he does. I would go straight to a GI.
I would stop giving him anything that can cause irritation. Tomato sauce and chocolate are big culprits. If you can get him to drink warm water with lemon in the morning, that will neutralize the acid in his stomach. Even water with a teaspoon of baking soda will help. It will be salty but will help.
I would have him follow a GERD diet. If you look it up, it will show what foods to avoid. It will be trial and error.

Manuka Health is the brand I find there. How is it on the face? I might have to try that!

Does everyone use it in the AM? What if my issues happen more when I lie down. I'm better during the day.

Re: Acid Reflux?
My daughters voice was hoarse every morning so I asked the ped about it. They sent me to an ENT where they put a scope down her nose to rule out any kind of voice box issues. Turned out she was irritated from reflux. They put her on zantac for two months which gave her body time to heal the irritation and shes been fine ever since. While the scope was uncomfortable for her, it was quick and I'm so glad we did it.

On an empty stomach before breakfast, just toast with the honey spread on thick. The idea is that it heals the stomach, so you won't get reflux anymore when you lay down, etc.
