?? about Points on your license
My gf got a speeding ticket last January. She paid the fine and took a drivers ed class to reduce her points and insurance. She just called me today to tell me she got another speeding ticket and wondered if the original points would not be added to these as she took the class. Is this true as she is very worried about losing her license. Thanks!

Re: ?? about Points on your license
If she used the class to deduct the original points, she cannot re-take the class or use the class taken to reduce new points.
I believe in NYS you need 12 points before your license will get suspended.

You can only take the class every 18 months to reduce points.

Also, you can only reduce your points down to 0. You can't "save" them and use them for future tickets. (Yes, the instructor explains that in the class... ). If her class reduced her points by more than she had, she will only go down to 0, and whatever she gets this time will count for the full number of points.

Yes, she had 4 and they took off the 4.

Re: ?? about Points on your license
Just to confuse more.... the points that they 'take off' your license are taken away in the fact that they don't count towards license suspension. They STILL count towards the Driver Responsibliity Penalty.
So if she got 2 - 4 point infractions - and took a class that was worth 4 points. Her driver responsiblity total would be 8 points to pay against, but her license suspension points would only be 4.

You can also have your license suspended if you get 3 moving violations in an 18-month period. I know this from personal experience.

Interesting. So if she got 4 more now it would equal 8? Aren't those 4 taken off her record though?

Even if you take the class to get the points off?

Yes, it is an automatic thing if you get 3 within 18 months. The moving violations are still on your record even if you have the points reduced.

Re: ?? about Points on your license
The points will be taken off, but just be aware that her insurance company will still pick them up and charge fees.
It takes 3 years to get the points off your liscense, and they only actually come off the January after the 3rd anniversary.
So if you get them in Oct 07, they will only be taken off your record in Jan '11

The classes take points off towards your license suspension. It does NOT take points off of your calculated driver responsiblity fees.
If she got 4 more after that... then she would have 8 towards her getting her license suspended, and 12 towards her driver responsibility fee, which kicks in at any point total 6 or above.
Example, with fake dates:
8/1 Speeding, 4 points There would be 4 points towards license suspension and 4 points towards driver responsibility.
9/1 Speeding, 4 points There would be 8 points towards license suspension and 8 points towards driver responsibility.
9/15 Take a class, -4 points There would be 4 points towards license suspension and 8 points towards driver responsibility.
10/1 Speeding, 4 points There would be 8 points towards license suspension and 12 points towards driver responsibility.

Never knew that. I will have to print this out for her! Thanks.

Re: ?? about Points on your license
Not many people know about the driver responsibility fees - until the bill shows up in the mail.
The state passed it very very quietly....
