If you can do a lot of the work yourself, it will help cut down on cost. Do you need to move any plumbing? How big is the basement?

Basement in our old house was around 9k. Needed to be studded, Sheetrock, out in 1/2 bath high hats, and built 2 closets.

NO better place to start learning! I always say if you are thinking of hiring someone, try it first.. this way if you mess it up so what then you can hire someone...

It really depends on what you want to do and how large the basement is... if can range from $5k up to $40k...

When we refinished out last basement... we put in a whole kitchen where one didnt exist before (loved it for the summer, keeps the main floor cooler)... granite counter tops, all new plumbing so the slab had to be broken and repoured... We basically made it an entire 1 bedroom apt... all new electrical, new windows, new doors,

it all depends on how elaborate you are planning on going...

The basement now has wood paneling everywhere and an old bar. It's not used as a living space at all. We plan on taking out the bar and wood paneling and just opening up the area so it can be used as a play room.

You could save a lot of money by just painting the old paneling, putting down new carpeting etc. You don't want the bar? Is there any way you could spruce that up? If not just dismantle it yourselves
