? about flying southwest re:documentation
We are going to fl tomm, flying Southwest. My 6 y/o has a seat, my 1 y/o is a lap child. Do I need a birth certificate for both of them? If I don't have a birth certificate for my 1 y/o do u think the certificate of live birth would work? I think his may be in our vault and I won't be able to get there. It has all the same info and has a raised seal so I don't see what the difference is really. Tia!

I just flew SW with my 4 year old and they never asked for any birth certificate or ID for her. (I brought it anyway, just in case)
The only thing I would imagine with you though is that since you are bringing a lap infant, they might ask for proof of age since 2 and over have to purchase a seat.
I'd bring it just in case.

Thanks, I just hope the certificate of live birth is good enough, I mean it has his name and bday on it so I don't see why it wouldn't be!

Yes that should be fine.
TSA doesn't ask for ID from the kids so if anything it would be a gate agent or something - as proof for the lap child- but I doubt they will even ask.

I thought the certificate of live birth was the birth certificate?? Definitely bring it for your 1 year old. Have a great trip!
ETA: my sister flew Southwest frequently btw NY & FL with my nephew as a lap child and was often asked for proof of his age. She always had a copy of the birth certificate with her when she traveled.

they ask for proof for lap kids. I think what you have should be fine. Does it look a lot different then a birth cert? I guess my only worry would be if the person checking it doesn't accept it bc they dont normally see it??

But if you are travelling with a lap child who is free of charge due to their age, the airline, not the TSA, will ask for proof of age to make sure you aren't trying to pass off a 3 year old for being under 2 , etc

They don't always check but, if they do and you don't have it - you could be screwed.
My friend had an issue once on a return flight - she didn't bring her birth certificate for her lap child and they almost didn't let her board, after giving her a hard time they did.

Me too--isn't it the same thing??
People ask this often, and I always suggest just putting a copy into your carry-on. It isn't any trouble and it can save you a big headache and hassle if somebody asks for it and you don't have it.

For the sake of your child, please file for a birth certificate with the state. Eta you need a Berth certificate to get a passport and government issued benefits, like working papers. A certificate of live birth is not equal to a birth certificate. Call your town and ask what form you need to fill out to obtain a birth certificate.

I never knew this either. I've had to submit copies of my kids' birth certificates for a few things, and no one's ever questioned the certificate of live birth. The hospital definitely didn't inform me of having to apply for a seperate document.

For a ticketed child - you don't have to show anything up until age 18 if you are flying domestically.
For a lap child you are supposed to show proof (more often than not they don't ask though) on all airlines. It's more to prove that the child is the appropriate age for a lap child.
I've flown with both of my kids numerous times and was only asked once for a birth certificate for my lap child.
