Abdominal CT Scan

Hey girls, I am back with a quick question.

We are taking a break from our RE and TTC to take care of a few things and my general DR thinks it's a perfect time to schedule me for a full abdominal CT scan to rule out a few issues with my kidney- basically something possibly congenital OR scarring/endo on my ureter. I have great bloodwork and great sono scans so it's not an emergency but I can finally get answers as to why I get sporadic pain in that area.

That being said.... would you go through with it? I am so nervous with all of the radiation- it actually has the highest amount out of all CT scans and it will be around my ovaries and uterus. I already have poor reserve and I do want to start trying again in a few more cycles.. My general Dr did mention that he is not thrilled with all of the radiation in the reproductive area but he also said that I have never had a scan before so it's no big deal. I really am torn as to what to do!!
So many 'what if's'... would you put it off or just get it done?
I have had sonograms on the kidney and gallbladder and both come out fine. So the next step is def a CT scan. :/

Re: Abdominal CT Scan

Hmm. Tough call. I'm not really sure what I would do. I guess if the pain is that bad I would do it but if it is bearable I would skip it. Unless your doctor thinks it will be a problem if you are pregnant, maybe waiting would be better. Sorry I'm not much helpChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Abdominal CT Scan

Personally I wouldn't do it, because of the radiation. I feel like people don't really understand the effects of radiation on the body and they downplay them. I have nothing to back that up-it's just my personal opinion. The only reason I would do it would be if you feel like there is something that could potentially be dangerous to your health if it's not diagnosed through this CT scan.

Re: Abdominal CT Scan

Yea this is something I have had since I was a pre teen so that's why he is thinking congential. It only bothers me a few times out of a year ironically.. he just wants to use this opportunity of not TTC to get it but I can't believe the radiation amounts!! Its 3x more radiation than a head CTscan..

Re: Abdominal CT Scan

I work in a radiology facility and although it is radiation, one CT does not have enough radiation to have an effect on your organs. You would need repeated exposure, in addition to all the radiation we are exposed to on a regular basis. Since this is your first CT, you shouldn't worry. CT scanners now use the lowest dose possible. Also, if it is only a CT of your abdomen, you can request a radiation shield be put on your pelvis. There are patients that come in every 3 months for CTs, and I can assure you they have no issues.

But, if you are concerned with the radiation you could ask your doctor to order an MRI instead. No radiation for that test.

If it were me, and I know everyone is different, I would ask my dr about an MRI. If my ins would not cover the MRI I would go through with the CT.

Best of luck Lillies!!!!!!!!
