Abacus
Is this useful when doing homework/teaching math to have around? or should I not even bother spending the $10 to have in the house? I don't want to keep buying junk that clutters up the house and I think it would be silly to buy but part of me feels like this could be very useful...

I personally don't know a single person who has ever had one. My mother was a math teacher and we never had one in the house.
Waste IMO.

I love the sound of them and they are good for counting but necessary? No.

As a former math teacher, I've never used one. I'd just have some kind of counting manipulative but you can use blocks, beads, anything. If you're really set on an abacus, I'm sure there a free app you could try!

I'm a very visual learner and I struggled in math so much. I was able to use one as a child in school and it helped me a lot. So I don't think it's necessary but I think they can be good if a child needs help.

I have one and I love it but I don't think it's necessary. My kids don't really play with it yet & not sure if they will, I think I play with it more than they do lol.

Definitely not needed. I had one when I was young that someone gave to me - it looked cool but, I never used it for the purpose it was meant for.
