a way to obtain cell phone password?

if someone has a password or pin code securing their cell phone - is there a way to obtain that code WITHOUT the phone user knowing?
for example, if a parent has a teenage child and the phone is in the parents name... is there a way for the parent to be able to gain access to the pin code, to be able to check text messages etc, without the kid ever knowing?

See I don't think so and this is totally not coming from any knowledge on the subject but what I think is that the password that locks your phone is just stored on the phone- not anywhere within the carriers network.
I would imagine the carrier might be able to reset that password- say if you forgot it or something- but I don't think that password is stored anywhere on their network, kwim?

I have a passcode on my Verizon *account* which is separate from a passcode or pin code on the actual phone. I imagine that they might be able to access the code if it is on the account, but I don't think there's a way to do so if it's the code on the phone.

If the phone is in the parent's name, I'd think they would have complete control over the account. I'd call the cell company & discuss options.
