A question for teachers
My brother just got a permanent sub position in a middle school... he is starting Monday!!
Anyway, he is really nervous--what exactly does a permanent sub do? His fiancée told him he needs to make lessons... but he doesn't know what grade! I said he just has to sub for whoever needs it that day, and that the regular teacher should leave him plans.
We don't have permanent subs at my school... can anyone shed some light on it?
TIA!

Re: A question for teachers
It could be both. It could be the first sub for the school or district that is called. More reliable work. But it could be something totally different every day. Or it could be a leave replacement for someone on maternity leave, too.

at least in the schools I have worked in, you won't need plans....the teachers generally leave these for you....its just like a reg sub job but you get paid every day and get better benefits! congrats to him!!

Re: A question for teachers
I was a perm sub in a middle school and an elementary school - you don't really need to make plans. The teachers almost always leave plans, and if by chance they don't all he really has to do is talk to another teacher on that team, or in that grade and they can fill him in.

Re: A question for teachers
In my school the permenant sub comes in every day and is the first person to cover classes. On any given day in a high school there needs to be at least 5 classes covered due to absences, teacher meetings, conferences, field trips etc.
Most likely no lesson plans.

same here. perm subs come in everyday and are paid whether they cover 1 period or 8. they are the first subs to receive assignments - but depending on the day it can be very slow! my GF was a leave replacement and then when that ended she was moved to perm sub status.

Re: A question for teachers
I was a permanent sub for about 2 years before getting my permanent job. It was great because I worked everyday. I was a perm sub for one particular building. If they didn't need me, I would be asked to go to another building in the district. It would be any grade level K-12. If they didn't need me at all, they would just put me in a classroom to help out for the day. Some districts are really loyal to their permanent subs and will consider them first for jobs. It's a great opportunity for him to get himself known. So, congrats to him!
