A new "classic" skincare product rec!!!

So, my skincare routine is full of strong stuff like benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acids and retinol. I needed something to use as a pre cleanse to my cleanser (doesn't take off makeup) and just something to soothe my skin. I did a lot of research (I'm a geek) and found that Ponds Cold Cream (the classic, original one) is perfect for skin and even helps acne. Yes, it has mineral oil, but it's a grade of it that won't upset your skin. I checked!!! So I ran to Eckerd and picked some up...applied it right to my dry face and left it on for a few minutes, then rinsed it off. My skin is soooo soft. Woke up to really smooth skin, too....Just an FYI! :)

Wow, my dematologist told me to stay away from Ponds b/c it will clog your pores/cause breakouts.

For a "classic" I use Dove soap and it has done wonders for my skin - I've been using it religiously for 2 months. My skin is soft and no huge breakouts.

I have found over the years that I do more research and have a better understanding of certain things, especially ingredients, than some of the docs I have seen over the years...NOT trying to sound like a know it all...but lately, my derm is like, "OK...what are you using?!"

I've used Dove soap for years. I've never had a problem with breakouts or anything.

I just switched to the CVS brand of Cetaphil for the winter season because my skin was getting very dry. No problems with that either, but my face still feels cleaner when I use Dove.

I agree...to a point.

I hate petroleum (and won't use anything with it in it) so the thought of using mineral oil skeeves me. I was using Ponds (ironically LOL) and breaking out so I guess that was why he pointed it out? (When I went to him I brought my regimen. He told me to scrap it all and just use Dove soap and sunscreen...2 months later, so far so good.)

I'm glad it's woring for you Chat Icon Just shows you how different everyone's skin is.

I also don't use it alone; I use it, then rinse with an acne cleanser....so maybe that's why it works! LOL!

if you like the classic, you'll love the cucumber cold cream - i've been using it for years!

just slab some on and scrub with a washcloth. it takes off all makeup and leaves my skin feeling so smooth and glowy!

Re: A new "classic" skincare product rec!!!

MINERAL OIL: Clear, odorless oil derived from petroleum that is widely used in cosmetics because it rarely causes allergic reactions and can't become a solid and clog pores. Despite mineral oil's association with petroleum and the hype that it is bad for skin, keep in mind that petroleum is a natural ingredient derived from the earth and that once it becomes mineral oil, it has no resemblance to the original petroleum. Cosmetics-grade mineral oil and petrolatum are considered the safest, most nonirritating moisturizing ingredients ever found (Sources: Cosmetics & Toiletries, January 2001, page 79; and Cosmetic Dermatology, September 2000, pages 44–46). Yes, they can keep air off the skin to some extent, but that's what a good antioxidant is supposed to do; they don't suffocate skin! Moreover, mineral oil and petrolatum are known to be efficacious in wound healing, and are also considered to be among the most effective moisturizing ingredients available (Source: Cosmetics & Toiletries, February 1998, pages 33–40).

I find that the most simple and inexpensive products work best for my skin. I recently switched dermatologists and I am so much happier. My old derm was loading me up on expensive products that just didn't work for me. My new doctor totally changed my routine and my skin has never looked better!

It's the smell of petroleum that I can't take - I gag when I apply lip balm with it in it so I avoid it at all costs. Chat Icon

Interesting about the moisturizing comment...my understanding is that while mineral will block moisture loss it doesn't actually moisturize since it doesn't penetrate the skin.

Could not agree more! I can't believe how much money I wasted on product after product only to find that "old school" products really are the best (for my skin). Chat Icon

Those are the only two products my derm recommends using for cleaning. (& I use)
