For Shari Kurzrok's family and friends, watching her walk down the aisle Saturday will be nothing short of a miracle.
Three months ago, the 31-year-old public relations executive collapsed without warning in her Manhattan apartment. For three weeks, she lay in NYU Medical Center in Manhattan, struggling for life as her liver failed her.
The next three weeks were filled with uncertainty for Kurzrok's family, said Morton Kurzrok, Shari's father. Friends and co-workers started Web sites and petitioned the media hoping to get the word out and find a liver. Kurzrok's family held a vigil at her bedside while she was on a breathing machine.
On Aug. 6, Kurzrok, who was raised in Great Neck, underwent her liver transplant. Nearly three weeks later, she was discharged from the hospital and began physical therapy to increase her strength.
"I was just focused on getting through what I was going through at the time," Kurzrok said Friday, in the midst of last-minute wedding errands. "It was one day at a time."
Doctors still aren't certain what caused Kurzrok's liver to fail. Dr. Lewis W. Teperman, director of transplantation at NYU Medical Center, suspects she suffered from Wilson's disease, a genetic condition that can cause excessive copper buildup in the liver.
"She was very yellow. Her mind had failed and her kidneys had failed," Teperman said. "She was on a dialysis machine. She was so far gone. She's unbelievable lucky."
But Kurzrok overcame it all. And she did it with fiance Rob Schnall by her side. Shari and Robby, as she affectionately calls him, met in the summer of 2002 when they shared a ride from Fire Island to Manhattan with Tommy's Taxi, a local company that often makes that trip.
Kurzrok will tell you sparks didn't fly at first: "I didn't think he was my type and he thought I was too young -- well, younger than I really was."
But Kurzrok took Schnall's business card and the pair began an e-mail relationship that transformed into a date. Schnall proposed last November inside a Tommy's Taxi covered in rose petals and furnished with champagne.
The couple thought about postponing their wedding but "wanted to go ahead like we had planned," Kurzrok said.
So Saturday evening, they'll get married at the Woodbury Jewish Center. "Since this whole thing has happened, my outlook on life has changed a lot," Kurzrok said. "Every minute is a blessing for me."
While in the hospital, Kurzrok, who works at Ogilvy Public Relations in Manhattan and lives in Murray Hill, started the Shari Kurzrok Second Chance for Life Foundation to raise awareness about the need for organ donations.
For her father, the ordeal was surreal. When doctors first told him his daughter needed a liver, he spun around in the hospital hallway, assuming they were talking to someone else.
The near-tragedy "makes [the wedding] so much more vivid, important," he said, holding back tears. "It's a miracle."

That is so amazing!!! Besides being on the verge of tears reading the story, once I got to the part about how her FI proposed I got the chills beyond belief.
