A LIF'er FM'd me asking if my Dr. has prescribed me prenatals...

To follow-up on a recent post about getting a BFP and not having a Dr's appt until Nov. 9th...

An LIF'er FM'd me and asked if the Dr. had prescribed me prenatals. No prenatals were mentioned to me. When I met with my original Dr. in NYC (we recently moved to NJ), she told me that as long as I was taking a good multi-vitamin I am fine. I have been taking vitamins for about 2 months now.

Do I need to take prenatals on top of the vitamins?

My doctor told me while TTC a regular daily vitamin like One A Day was fine, however as soon as I got my BFP he prescribed me a prenatal. Prenatals have more iron and folic acid. You take a prenatal instead of a regular daily vitamin.

Hope that helpsChat Icon

I had to wait nearly a month too, for my first appointment. After I scheduled it, I was transferred to a nurse who took my pharmacy info so that she could call in a prescription prenatal for me. Maybe you can call the doc back and ask if they can do something similar, or maybe recommend an OTC one that covers your folic acid needs?

My doc didn't mention anything about prenatals either. He said to just keep taking the folic acid and start taking a multi-vitamin (which reminds me, I need to go out and get a bottle!).

Re: A LIF'er FM'd me asking if my Dr. has prescribed me prenatals...

My doc did not prescribe me prenatals until my first OB appointment. However, I was taking OTC prenatals for about 3 months prior to becoming PG and for a few weeks after my BFP. I first used GNC brand, and then switched to Trader Joe's brand (much cheaper, although someone told me they stopped making them). You should be able to find OTC prenatals in any drugstore, ask the pharmacist. You would take the prenatals in place of your regular multivitamin.

If you want to start taking a prenatal, you can buy an over the counter one. I used the Target brand when I was pg with Nate. I've heard alot of girls also taking the Flintstones vitamins.

You can buy OTC pre-natals, they turned out to be cheaper than the ones I was prescribed.

A regular multi is fine but you also need extra Folic Acid. Pre-natals contain the extra Folic Acid.

I did not get a prescription until my 8 week visit. I took a multi-vitamin and an extra folic acid supplement instead.

Folic Acid is the ingredient in prenatal vits that is important. Research shows (at least when I was PG years ago) that folic acid in the first tremester and even in the months previous to concenption lowers the risk of spina bifida.

Getting a prenatal was one of the reasons I wanted to see my doctor right in the beginning. There are OTC ones that you can buy. I would just call your doctor tomorrow and see what he says. He can call in a prescription for you.

Re: A LIF'er FM'd me asking if my Dr. has prescribed me prenatals...

When I went through the insurance debacle with the prenatals, my doctor said the OTC prenatals were FINE- BUT she also wanted me to take an additional supplement also sold OTC.

It's called Efecta (Ithink). It's in the vitamin aisle at Target- it has additional DHA(Omega-3) and folic acid.

Most OTC prenatals have 800 mcg of folic while the prescription brands have 1000mcg. I'm not sure what the amount of DHA is in the OTC vs. the prescribed. She was really hyped about me getting the increased amounts of DHA.

I wound up eating the cost of the prescribed prenatals-mainly becuase I didn't want to be taking more pills. With the OTC, I would be taking 3 pills- the prescribed is just one horse pill.

My doctors office told me to come by and they gave me samples of prenatal vitamins to hold me over to my 1st appointment. I am sure if you call your doctor they can call in a prescription or have the dr. write one out that you can pick up.

You should not take both a multi-vitamin and prenatals. They are some vitamins and minerals that are dangerous in higher doses.

I saw the other doctor in my practice last night (6+ weeks) and he went to write me an Rx for prenatals (I'm already on them) - so I think it's pretty common to wait.

My 1st appt is Nov 8th and the receptionist asked if I was taking prenatals. I told her I picked up some over the counter ones and she said that was fine. Mine are from Walmart and say PRENATAL on them. You want 800 mcg of folic acid. Normal vitamins have 400 mcg.

You can get OTC prenatals. GNC sells them.

I had an appointment early on, but I got OTC Target brand and that worked for a few days. I can send you the bottle if you want, it is almost full! Chat Icon

But do not take prenatals on top of a multivitamin, that is just too much for your body to handle and trust me there is already a lot going on!!

The week I found I out I was pg I went out and bought OTC prenatals not knowing I was pg just to start them. But since you are taking regular viatamins I would just continue with them.

FYI the vitamin you shoudl watch out for when PG is Vitamin A-increased doses of it that is

You could just add folic acid to your regular vitamins or replace your vitamins by prenatals.

I got mine at Target.
