Absolutely amazing pics!!! What a difference 14 years makes!! It still makes me SO sad to look at any 9/11 pics, 14 years and it NEVER gets easier to relive that day. Just so unreal.

Re: 9/11: Then and now
Omg. The pic of the destroyed fire truck. My dad is a firefighter (God willing he will finally retire next year at 31 years!!!) makes me cry. He was there and never talks about it. Says no one should see the things he's seen and doesn't want to tell us because he said we'll have nightmares for the rest of our lives. I hate thinking about that awful day. My stomach gets in knots. I pray my children will never have to see something like this ever in their lifetime.

9/11: Then and now
Amazing pictures. I actually now work right on Broadway across from Trinity Church (I didn't at the time). Crazy to see what everything looked like that day and what it looks like now.

Re: 9/11: Then and now
I was in grad school in the area at the time of 9/11, and it is just chilling to see the scenes of the streets, the ash, the horror… Though I thankfully was not there that day, I was there less than 12 hours before. I remember looking up to admire the towers before heading home. These pictures really bring me back. I'll never forget. It's amazing to see what it looks like now. Thank you for posting.

Re: 9/11: Then and now
I just saw this on my newsfeed and thought oh my, I should share this because it is so moving. I also think it is inspiring - look at how far we have come. We will never forget that day and those lost but the sheer task of rebuilding and enduring that nightmare was just inconceivable -- but we have surely done it. We are surviving... as a city, as a Nation, etc. We have done it. I feel such pride - as a New Yorker and an American.

I pray my children will never have to see something like this ever in their lifetime.
You writing this really made me think of something I never thought of before!
Growing up, being that my grandparents "witnessed" Pearl Harbor and WWII, I always heard my grandaddy talk about it and share what it was like to live through that and I tried to imagine but, of course, you can't truly imagine it unless I was in his shoes. And not that I took it for granted but in my mind, growing up, I always thought "that was then, we are safe now"... KWIM? I never, ever in a million years thought something that huge and that catastrophic and horrific could happen AGAIN - Like another Pearl Harbor only right in our backyard, so to speak.
And it wasn't until you just wrote that -- which made me think of my son, and I thought to myself, "oh no, he will never see anything like this - no way"... but then I was like, "wait, wow, my grandparents probably thought after Pearl Harbor and winning WWII that the future generations were OK". So, that's what made me realize - Pearl Harbor was to them what 9/11 was to me and how horrible that we both had to experience that. And it's like I finally know how much of an impact it had on my grandparents and their lives - but especially my grandaddy who, after Pearl Harbor, proudly enlisted in the US Navy and fought against Japan. I will absolutely, and was already planning on doing so, educate my son about 9/11 and share with him what my grandparents used to share with me about living through Pearl Harbor and what all of that meant.

Re: 9/11: Then and now
Yes. I agree with everything you just wrote. I fully plan on telling my kids exactly what we experienced first hand that day, about their grandpa that was there, how we didn't hear from him in over 24 hours, how their grandma kept telling me and my sister he is fine, don't worry, and I walked in the bathroom and found her sobbing on the floor. How their daddy (we were dating at the time) walked home from the city and how we went to pick him up in Long Island city after he waited in line 2 hours to use a pay phone and so many more things I can't even write because I am sobbing now.
I will tell my children because we lived it and experienced it and it's more than any book or news article could ever tell them.
