9/11 Museum

I am taking my kids in a couple of weeks. For those of you who have gone, is a tour necessary or is it fine to explore on your own? approximately how long did you spend there?

We did it without a tour. We were there about 2 hrs I believe - it was just DH and I and we went during the previews though.

We did the tour but also explored on our own. Not sure how old your kids are but one of my sons (9 at the time) couldn't handle it. We had to take him out. It is very powerful and upsetting. I cried multiple times while we were there.

I did not go on a tour. I was there a few hours and still didn't see everything.
There are some areas that children aren't allowed (although people do bring them in).

DH & I didn't take a tour, walked through on our own about an hour & a half. My DH is from another country, so a lot of it was stuff he never saw or heard...I was wanting to go through quicker cuz it's still so fresh to me to see certain things. So we probably could've taken longer, but we felt that was enough.

I went with DH, we didn't bring the kids. We were there about 2 hours. Like a PP said, we probably could have stayed longer, but it was very emotional. We did not do a tour.

We did the audio tour. I would recommend it. But there is so much to see you can spend hours there, even without the audio.

There is an entire room devoted to the victims, with photos and info on the thousands of people. So you can choose how deep to dive in.

I think it's pretty heavy for kids though.

My sister and I took her daughter and our niece and nephew (14, 14 & 10 at the time) and did it without the tour. We made sure to give the kids choices... my sister would go in an area - check it out an describe it... and if they didn't want to go in, they didn't have to. It worked out fine for us and the kids were very interested, asking questions etc.

We explored on our own for a few hours. They did a beautiful job in the museum, it's so poignant and so sad.

ETA - We took the kids, they were 7 and 3. With the 7 yr old we explained some details on 9/11 but we didn't get too heavy with it. We also didn't take her in to see some of the films/footage they had. We thought it would be a little too much for her to see certain images.
