both cats are peacefully sleeping on my bed, so that.....
from 9 pm - 2am they can chase each other up and down the hallway, and crash into the bedroom door

Yes, that's what cats do. I have 2 myself. I can relate to the insanity.
We figure they think from 11 p.m until 5 a.m. is cat-time. If the humans happen to be awake during that time, it's our problem, and we just have to deal with their "cat-ness." Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.
