Being I have a DD, I was told this too.
I growing up had them as well. Mine started a little later but continued for quite some time.

Well, my DD had one the week before she turned 1. She's 2 now and (knock on wood) hasn't had another since. Another mom on here who I'm friendly with, her DD had one when she was around 18 months or so.
Not sure about older girls, but it's not terribly uncommon in younger girls (obviously not the norm, but not unheard of).
ETA: Both my DD and the other girl have kidney issues that *may* cause them to be more succeptible to UTIs.
