Q: How can I avoid having to re-file every year?
A: If you file a NYS income tax return every year, you have the option of having your income verified by the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance for future years. If you choose to have your income verified by the State, you will automatically be renewed every year if financially eligible. If you do not opt into this program, or you do not file a NYS income tax return, a renewal application must be filed with the Nassau County Department of Assessment every year.

The above information is not correct unless you are a senior citizen applying for ENHANCED STAR. Basic Star does not require renewal unless you own more than one house and change your primary residence from one to another, or if you sell your home and move into another. The information is all on the Star application.

Really? That's good to know! So I will automatically get it again this year?
If none of the exceptions I posted above (moving, changing primary residence) apply to you, you will not have to renew. You have to renew for Enhanced Star which is for senior citizens b/c it is dependent upon your income- they have to prove they make below a certain amt. each year to continue to be eligible. Basic star is something that EVERYbody is eligible for if you own a home and it is your primary residence- it doesn't matter what your income is.

If you're still concerned call your tax assessor's office- they'll tell you the same thing, but sometimes it's more comforting to hear it from the horse's mouth.

Yes, you do not need to renew. And, it is true that Senior Citizens with Enhanced do.

Thats odd - I got that info off the assessors website and it didnt mention anything about being only for enhanced star

You only have to apply once for the Basic Star. It renews itself ever year. That's it.

I think maybe that paragraph was referring to the previous paragraph that talked about the enhanced STAR. They should be more specific, but I'm pretty sure for basic it just carries through.

The ONLY time you have to renew basic STAR is if you make any changes to the deed of the house.
ie: If you get married and change your name... you must renew.
